Just posted on The Atomic Grog, a recap of all the latest news and updates ...

http://www.slammie.com/atomicgrog/blog/2016/05/17/the-hukilau-updates-high-tide-party-announced-rum-sponsor-rundown-merchandise-preview-with-photos/

An overlay to the live performances in the waterfront Panorama Ballroom, High Tide is a special event celebrating the high water mark of the weekend and featuring Rhum Barbancourt cocktails by swashbuckling New York City bartender Brian Miller, plus Polynesian small bites from award-winning Atlanta-based celebrity chef Jim Stacy.

Existing Friday night passholders can buy wristbands for $35 giving them access to the special Barbancourt cocktails during High Tide (up to eight per person). Cocktails are also available for $10 each. Non-passholders can buy a Friday day pass that also includes the Tiki Road Trip Pool Party (noon-4 p.m.) and Tiki Treasures Bazaar (10 a.m.-8 p.m.) for $129. A Friday night pass is $99 (or $69 without drink bracelet). Stacy’s Polynesian tidbits will be sold à la carte. Hotel bars will also be selling cocktails and non-alcoholic beverages.

As a special treat, Friday’s High Tide event will also include The Hukilau debut of larger-than-life chef Jim Stacy, best known for his appearances on Food Network and the Cooking Channel.

Organizer Tiki Kiliki has stepped up the level of sponsor involvement to new heights in 2016, including 17 spirits companies (13 rums, plus gin, vodka, tequila and beer). There will be numerous opportunities to sample the sponsor spirits at tasting booths and special events throughout The Hukilau.

Global brand ambassador Alexx Mouzouris will be pouring cocktails for Don Q Rum at The Hukilau.

Martin Cate, owner of acclaimed San Francisco rum and Tiki haven Smuggler’s Cove, will sign copies of his new book, Smuggler’s Cove: Exotic Cocktails, Rum and the Cult of Tiki, at The Mai-Kai during the pre-party on Wednesday, June 8, from 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. The book’s official release date is June 7, so you’ll be among the first to check it out and meet the author.

The official limited-edition mug, sculpted by John Mulder and produced by Eekum Bookum, is a tribute to a Tiki at The Mai-Kai.

With Shag on board as a special guest and artist, The Hukilau’s 2016 official merchandise is shaping up to be among the most distinctive and collectible in the 15-year history of the event. Shag designs will appear on glassware (both Mai Tai and Zombie glasses), coasters, T-shirts, bar and beach towels, plus a swizzle stick. The limited-edition mug (created by John Mulder and Eekum Bookum) and pendant (carved by Crazy Al Evans and produced by Perry Drake) will both pay tribute to historic Tikis at The Mai-Kai.

Shag’s Mai-Kai artwork adorns the new Zombie glassware.

For updates on the merchandise, keep an eye on The Hukilau website and Facebook page. You can also sign up at TheHukilau.com to receive e-mail alerts.

I am also a first-timer at the Hukilau! Even thought I got tickets to the 2009, I ended up not being able to go due to a work conflict.

A lot easier to plan out my vacation schedule, now that I'm not freelance anymore. Whew!

Anyway. Hi there. I'm already overwhelmed. Someone get me a paper bag to breathe into. Also, there should be a drink inside the paper bag, please.

Ahhhh... much better.

Aloha bobtiki! We're sure you'll have a great time. Just remember to breathe.

More new stuff ...

The schedule just got a major update with lots of new info on the rum sponsors ...

The Atomic Grog is also updated with the latest sponsor news ...

I'm assuming there's a convenient FedEx or UPS location in the Fort Lauderdale area for all of my "shipping many goods home" needs on the Monday after Hukilau? :)

kevin

There is UPS store and several Pack-n-ship stores just on the west side of the bridge (shopping area has everything you will need - food, liqour, and more). Fort lauderdale main post office is directly across from Kreepy Tiki (on the way to the airport).

I'm exhausted just reading the schedule. Hope you all have a blast!

We'll be starting our week in Orlando (Trader Sam's and Aku Aku?) then driving down the Space Coast to Hukilau.
If anyone wants to meet up along the way, let me know! :D
Didn't there used to be a Florida pre-party?

The official mug and pendant are now on sale for passholders:

Also, there are now 15 rum sponsors offering free samples and cocktails! More info on the blog ...

The official Shag lithograph. Don't miss him signing these on Friday at 5:30 p.m. in the Bazaar!

Saturday, June 10, 2016 11:30am, Panorama Ballroom – Pier 66

I hope a lot of first timers attend my symposium on Saturday, it is about the Tiki revival before the Book of Tiki.
And for seasoned Tiki goers I will have some rare books and magazines for sale. These are not for sale anywhere else and no mail order. Available only if you are attending my seminar at Hukilau

I have dug into the Tiki News archives to offer old stock issues of Tiki News zine from 1995-2000 (see photo), I will also have "Taboo: the Art of Tiki" 1999 one softcover and one hard cover edition, "Leeteg of Tahiti" by John Turner, Tiki Art Now! volume 1 signed by some of the artists, and one of these limited Shag charm bracelets sold only at Tiki Oasis 2015 (photos below). Bracelet is $100

Otto: I can't wait! I've heard stories about some ancient tablet filled with stories of Tiki, but I've never had my hands on one.

FYI, everyone attending should check out the official Hukilau app. It's pretty snazzy:

Also, I just posted a few historical documents of my own in cyberspace:

More to come on the blog.

To say that re-entry back into a normal routine was a challenge would be appropriate. But, a week or so after I'm almost there.

Aloha and mahalo Christie! As mentioned previously this was our first Hukilau and we were blown away. There was always something exciting to be doing, whether it was a symposium, live music, or just hanging out talking to friends. And finally experiencing the Mai-Kai with our fellow tiki nerds? I'm not gonna lie, I think I got a little dust in my eye on Saturday night during the stage show and presentation.

To try and enumerate all of the great experiences from the weekend would be very difficult, so I'm going to try and let some pictures do that job. Personally it was thrilling for me to finally meet Jeff Berry in person as he's been a huge influence on me. Getting the "Raiders of the Lost Tiki" panel discussion together and hearing stories of old - I could have listened to that for twice as long. Seeing Jason Lee and Tikiyaki perform on the east coast was something special as well. Trading Smuggler's Cove recipe cards with others on the hunt...opening a welcome bag full of Hukilau logo gifts...digging into the Mai-Kai cocktail menu...sampling cocktails at the pool party between symposiums...and all of the symposiums we attended were interesting and full of great info (can't wait for the book, Swanky!).

We felt very welcomed and can't thank you and your staff and volunteers and the performers and the presenters enough for the hard work in putting the event together.

Below are photos from Wednesday night at the Mai-Kai's Molokai Bar, with a pre-party and a book signing by Martin and Rebecca Cate. Unfortunately I was holding down a table in the Molokai Bar while Val picked up a signed book and mug, so my photos are of cocktails and tikis and not so much of the event (more to come).

Next post: Hukilau's Thursday! With event photos!

kevin

Great pics! Keep em coming!

Here's my camera's view of Hukilau Thursday: primarily the Tiki Tower Takeover and the Thursday night Bazaar preview with Jason Lee & The R.I.P. Tides performing. I recall Thursday going from lounging by the pool in the morning to Shag's Sky Lounge in what felt like 28 seconds. Apologies, I didn't take my camera to Shag's Sky Lounge.

Welcome to The Hukilau 2016

The start of the Tiki Tower Takeover was a bit delayed, but the Creepy Tiki Lounge kept pouring and King Kukulele (literally) rose to the occasion to entertain the crowd.

Lost Lake, with a fresh coconut and great garnishes.

"All Static, All Day"

A stop at Fort Defiance. I can't remember the cocktail name, but I do remember it being very delicious.

Brian Miller and his merry band of Pirates with the "Funky Derelict".

Martin and Rebecca Cate, pouring and garnishing the "Captivation."

Always concentrate on your pour!

Great photos Kevin!

Here's the first of The Atomic Grog's epic recaps of The Hukilau featuring photos from more than a dozen photographers, first-person stories, bonus cocktail recipes, plus more!

Day 1: Smuggler's Cove book signing, Pre-Party at The Mai-Kai, The Wreck Bar mermaid show

Good stuff Jim. Love that group shot at King Kai.

Friday photos! It took a little longer to sort/process these, mostly because my lack of skill at taking photos with stage lighting is matched only by my inability to color-correct those photos in post-processing. In any case, here's set 1 of 2 for Friday: Symposiums by Shag, Swanky, and Jeff "Beachbum" Berry.

Next up: The Friday night High Tide event!

kevin

Friday set 2 of 2: Live at the High Tide. Jason Lee and the R.I.P. Tides, The Intoxicators, and The Tikiyaki Orchestra. Great performances all around. Wish I had a live recording of the sets.

Coming soon(ish): you guessed it, Saturday photos.

kevin

If you missed The Hukilau, or somehow didn't grab all the official merchandise by artists such as Shag and Eekum Bookum, now's your chance to snag some collectible souvenirs:

http://thehukilau.com/2016/official-souvenirs/

Mugs, prints, glassware, swizzle sticks, plus beach and bar towels are all on sale now while supplies last. Many items are expected to sell out fast, so don't delay.

Still to be added to the The Hukilau's official merchandise page are the event pendants and T-shirts. Keep an eye on the website for updates.

Here's The Atomic Grog story on the merchandise, including a recipe for Brian Miller’s Greedo in Paradise featuring Rhum Barbancourt, served at Friday night's High Tide ...

And the countdown to 2017 begins ...

Saturday photos: Symposiums with Humu, Otto, and the Raiders of the Lost Tiki panel. There's also a few photos from the evening's festivities at the Mai-Kai.

There are a few more from Sunday to come, mostly a walking tour of the Mai-Kai gardens.

kevin

Ok, time for that Sunday walk though the gardens of the Mai-Kai, just because.

Thanks again to Christie and the entire Hukilau crew. What an amazing time.

kevin

A very long time in coming ...

Wow! What an awesome recap! Thanks for this. I'm seriously bummed that I missed last year.

I bought tics early this year...but after the email this week, I feel like last year was the Last Hurrah. :(

Hearn: There's still lots to look forward to this year. Check out my latest preview ...

Also, there will likely be more symposiums about The Mai-Kai than ever before. Stay tuned for more info.
