And aside from the catalog page I saw Somewhere, I haven't seen one either. I remember the catalog because I remember thinking "That one is kinda cool except for the weird little dude on his head"

But I like him much better in real life!

Got this tiki at Oasis Saturday morning. Bout 20” tall, carved from a palm log. Artist is from Phoenix. His name is Pierre-I wish I knew more about him.

I haven't posted a 'find' in ages!

I've been in Spain for two weeks, there are 3 tiki bars are listed on Critiki in Barcelona (& one bar that serves tiki drinks) so we decided to hit up the 3.

The Spainish tiki style is really wacky & cluttered, the first two bars (Kahala & Aloha) were definitely relics that looked like they hadn't changed much since they opened. Kahiki is a little more modern looking.

All the bars used Porcelanas Pavon mugs although the odd Cheeky Tiki, Tiki Farm & APS Tiki mugs were also present:

The mugs were for sale in Kahala ($40!) & not the other two bars... but a bit of conversation snagged me one in Kahiki for half that. They were all pretty ugly, I brought the most 'normal' one:

Cheers all!

Found this Trader Vic's bread and butter plate online a few months ago. Didn't quite get it for a steal, but it wasn't any worse than some tiki mugs. Now I just need a tiki bar to put it in.

Here are various things found in recent times...

The first one isn't from the South Pacific, but it looks nice alongside the various Polynesian and Melanesian weapons I have on the walls:

A South American blowpipe. It's a tourist piece by the looks of it. Any further details gratefully accepted...

A TEAL ashtray, circa 1960, found in Wellington:

A 2 ft tall plastic Maori wall panel from the 1960s, made in Auckland (and found there):

This one is from the estate of a missionary who lived in PNG. I had it reframed as the original frame was bland and boring. It looks like it dates from the 1970s or 1980s. I am not sure which tribe this fella comes from....

that panel was part of an entire grouping that formed the frame of a maori meeting hut. I had most of the pieces years ago. it's like foam filled with fiberglass or plastic outer shell. not sure of origin but I'm willing to bet these were made back in the day and sold for parties or decorating.

Today's score. They are old, they were carved really well (no amateur stuff), they are extremely weathered, and someone gave them a 80's paint job (which will be removed by this weekend)

I know I have seen this face on the little ones before. At first I thought "tropicana lodge" in fresno, but that isn't it. Its also similar to the Horace Heidts tiki in some ways....

The mouth design is so familiar to me but I can't place it yet.....

Look familiar to anyone? I'm thinkin outside at a hotel. Supposedly came out of the LA area.

Wow so many tikis I've never seen before. We did some hunting and came up with:

A tiki candle with a ring in his nose.

A Tahiti beer glass, sorry for the poor photo and a Tahitian wooden bowl.

Bay Park Buzzy thank you for the information. You are right! Dr. Tiki Mojo told me that it was a kava kava bowl too. I would like to see what kava kava looks like. Thick or thin, smooth or lumpy?

we did a carving demo at PIFA many years ago, and the Tongans let us take part in their kava kava ceremony with them. A couple of us got some to take home in little plastic ziplock baggies, like it was cocaine. It was powder, like the consistency of flour, and the color of brown sugar.

Buzzy Out!

Not sure about this one. Pretty tacky but might be kinda cool at a party though and it holds 20 oz. Actually not a bad Marquesan style for a plastic cup.
In case someone actually wants to find these here is info from the box.

Have seen where the natives would peel the kava and sell the peels to others and they think the peels may have been bad for people to use long term, as in cancer.

The native women chew the Kava and spit it into a bowl till they get a big bowl of spit and Kava.
The yeast from the natives spit helps ferment the Kava and make a kind of beer.
Don't think they do it this way very much anymore.

Taking Kava Safely
Stress, anxiety and insomnia are at epidemic levels and kava offers a natural alternative to prescription anti-anxiety medications and sleeping pills which have significant side effects. Kava in the form of a supplement is not the same as traditional kava tea, so use common sense when taking a kava supplement. The American Botanical Council offers these common sense precautions:
Don’t use kava if you have liver problems.
Don’t take kava if you regularly use alcohol.
Don’t mix kava with any drug that adversely effects the liver — this includes both prescription and over-the-counter medications. You can check if kava has any known interaction with any medication in this drug interaction checker.
Don’t use kava for more than four weeks at a time.
Discontinue kava use if you develop signs of jaundice or hepatitis.
Don’t take kava with other anti-anxiety remedies such as 5-HTP, melatonin or St. John’s wort.
As with many other herbal remedies, kava’s safety has not been established for pregnant or nursing women.
When buying a kava supplement, remember that quality matters. It’s always a good idea to buy kava or any herbal supplement from a reputable company that adheres to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices) and has an established reputation of caring about the safety and effectiveness of their products.

that panel was part of an entire grouping that formed the frame of a maori meeting hut. I had most of the pieces years ago. it's like foam filled with fiberglass or plastic outer shell. not sure of origin but I'm willing to bet these were made back in the day and sold for parties or decorating.
