There is always someone trying to ruin the party. Poor kids.

I remember reading about this in the last Tiki News - almost 4 years ago :( The next Tiki News is going to have to be 1000 pages to fit in all the news from the last 4 years!

Filslash,
Your posts are right on.

They could be the kind of posts that bring purple jade out from hiding.

Not just art, but also a culturally significant expression which should have First Amendment protections.

Those Hawaiian youth are right on (and in touch with their culture.)

ummm....does that mean that this teacher exposed students to toxic chemicals by letting them carve into a "utility pole"?

yeah, if it was treated (and it looks too lightly colored to have been treated).

Our local Trader Joe's just put out a display that incorporates untreated utility-sized poles (in thickness - they're cut down). So, I guess they're out there...somewhere.

That would be creosote, ever wonder why ants or termites don't eat every telephone pole? They dip them in this toxic nasty stuff so nothing will eat them.

If you carve a telephone pole with any tool that will generate heat or friction some creosote will be vaporized and you will breath it.
