Stephen Hillenburg and his team of artists were no exception. Growing up, like most Southern Californians, Hillenburg most likely came into contact with a lot of things Tiki. When developing SpongeBob SquarePants for Nickelodeon, Hillenburg's concept art had a real Polynesian Pop/Bamboo Technology vibe to them. When it came time for the actual series, Hillenburg and his staff slipped in as much Tiki Imagery into the show as possible. A few examples are these stills from the segment "Something Smells."
