In Los Angeles and the surrounding Southern California area, a person cannot walk a few feet without coming across something from the bygone days of the Tiki Craze. Stephen Hillenburg and his team of artists were no exception. Growing up, like most Southern Californians, Hillenburg most likely came into contact with a lot of things Tiki. When developing SpongeBob SquarePants for Nickelodeon, Hillenburg's concept art had a real Polynesian Pop/Bamboo Technology vibe to them.

When it came time for the actual series, Hillenburg and his staff slipped in as much Tiki Imagery into the show as possible. A few examples are these stills from the segment "Something Smells."
