Ideal Tiki Bar Playlist?

Pages: 1 6 replies

I'm just wondering what an ideal playlist would be for your ideal tiki bar. My list might look something like this:

ALOHA AMIGO - Arthur Lyman

THE PLANET PLAN - United Future Organization

THE GOOD, THE BAD & THE UGLY - Hugo Montenegro

LA PALOMA - Mantovani

WAVE - Joao Gilberto

THE LADY IS A TRAMP - Sammy

CHINA NIGHTS - Martin Denny

SOUL BOSSA NOVA - Quincy Jones

THAT OLD BLACK MAGIC - Sammy

JUNGLE FLOWER - Martin Denny

VOLARE - Petty Booka

SIMILAU - Martin Denny

YOU MAKE ME FEEL SO YOUNG - Frank

PERFIDIA - Mantovani

FOOL'S PARADISE - United Future Organization

CHEGA DE SAUDADE - Quincy Jones

SO DANCO SAMBA - Jobim

TINY BUBBLES - Don Ho

JAPANESE FAREWELL SONG - Denny

BAUBLES, BANGLES & BEADS - Frank w/ Jobim

COPPERTONE - Friends of Dean Martinez

THAT'S AMORE - Dean

TICO TICO - Mantovani

MINAS DE COBRE - Calexico

It looks like BC-Da-Da had a similar idea to this post when listing "favorite neo-Exotica/Space-Age tracks." Here's that thread:

and here's another similar recent thread from Beyond Tiki, that started off as general lounge music but quickly got onto top tunes for your Tiki bar:

Why make a list of everything?
I can’t stand this “list thing”!
Who needs this and why? Having a list to shop for quality cocktail ingredients is one thing, but the exotica is so vast from the right perspective, it’s a blurry scene, and that’s good! Boil it down or what?

Sorry I guess it was a rant.

Here’s a playlist  of my current KK Tiki Lounge Axotica Edition tape:

side 1
Miserlou - Adomono
Flamenco Twist - Los Chavales de Espana
El Torito - The Guitar Ramblers

Hey! I'm a former Elvette (Lisa Maria)! And El Vez ALWAYS got us in the mood !

A couple of years ago, an Oxford, Miss. professor (one of the guys who put on the Elvis symposium), Robert Lopez (aka El Vez) and I were trying to put together a cruise down to Mexico, in which the academician would give lectures before the showings of Elvis' tropically set movies, and El Vez and I (glammed up movie-star style) would do an entertainment schtick at night. It was kinda The Professor, Ginger, and ...El Vez! It didn't make, though, dangit. How cool would that have been to get PAID to take a cruise down to Mexico, watch Elvis in his beautiful wedding attire in "Blue Hawaii" on board a ship, and sing for my supper! And my school was gonna let me take off the week from teaching, because we'd be going to Tulum, a Mayan site about which I teach but have never seen!!

No tears for me, though. I finally do get to go on a 4 day cruise (my first ever) to Tulum this Thanksgiving, only with my family, not a bunch of fellow fun-seeking Elvis lovers. sigh ("Gramma, where does Aunt Formikahini get all the teeny paper umbrellas from? Why isn't she playing shuffleboard with us? Is she sleeping late again?")

Yeah, I know, kinda off the topic from ideal playlists...

dunno if I'm allowed to promote a fellow list member's product here (haven't hit the big 101 yet but I AM a Tiki Centralite, so does that make it OK?) but I just received Swanky's Swank Exotica CD and I can tell you that it is the perfect Tiki bar playlist, bar none. I am stunned by its beauty (all 30+ tracks of it) and have driven my relationship to the point of breakdown by playing it on repeat since last Friday.

Otherwise (I'm getting a real deja vu thing on this topic now, what with Beyond Tiki and all) I can only say "Eartha Kitt! Eartha Kitt!!!"
