Here's the recipe. Enjoy!

Trader Vic's Cheese Balls

Makes about 30

1/2 pound cheddar cheese, shredded
6 oz. uncooked shrimp, peeled, deveined and finely chopped
1 1/2 tbsp. cilantro, chopped
1 tbsp. canned jalapenos, seeded, chopped
Pinch of chili powder

Vegetable oil for deep frying
1 cup flour
1/2 cup cornstarch
3/4 tsp.  baking powder
pinch of salt
1 cup water
2 tbsp. vegetable oil
1 cup Panko (Japanese Breadcrumbs)

Mix cheese, shrimp, cilantro, chilies and chili powder in a bowl.  Roll into 3/4 inch balls.

Heat oil in a deep fryer to 350.  Combine flour, cornstarch, baking powder and salt in a large bowl. Make a well in the center.  Add water and 2 tbsp. oil to well.  Gradually whisk liquid into flour until a smooth batter forms.  Dip cheese balls into batter, allowing excess to drip back into bowl.
Roll in panko, coating completely.  Add to oil in batches and fry until golden brown.  Drain on paper towels and serve immediately.

Can you hear the sound of all those vegetarian jaws hitting the floor?

"But I thought that was the only thing that Trader Vic's serves that DOESN'T have meat in it!"

I almost ordered them at TV's Bangkok, but thought it best to ask if there was any meat in it - close call!

Or Formikahini. Wham. Dead.
(Shellfish allergy! I would NOT think to ask if there were bloody SHRIMP in my CHEESE!!)

(Exaggeration - I get some lag time between ingestion, analphylactic shock, and death, thank Gawd - enough time to prevent at least the last one!)
