For starters, please forgive the workmanship/bad pics.
I was in a Strep throat meds delirium and it was my first attempt.
I have a VERY basic knowledge of carving to start with and any pointers would be greatly appreciated.
Enough shens, on to the pics.

Basic small block of Basswood

Look closely for the pencil marking for an outline

*NOTE It was to start out as an Easter Island type head.
But not so much.

As stated, lost the Easter Island feel as I went a little too deep on a cut

Smoothed out the edges with my wife's Emory nail files

Added tongue indention

So do your worst.
I was elated that in my delirium that I didn't lop off a finger that I think it's a start of future projects.

Used 1 straight chisel, 1 45deg angled blade, 1 dual 85deg angled blade, 1 small curved chisel
Wife's nail files (she's not really happy about that, but the end justified the means)

Everyone has to start somewhere, so congrats on getting started. About the only advice I can give is to use sharp tools, and keep them sharp. Keep posting your progress.

getting started is the hardest part, after that it's all cake. from what i can see from the photo he looks good. the best advice i got from my muse was "if you like it, that's all that counts". just keep chipping away and see what appears.

YES, The hardest part IS done, now get a bit bigger piece of wood , sharpen your tools and start anther one.
Walgreens has those "foam"nail boards in several grits from 100 up to Polish fineness and they are fairly inexpensive and Much cheaper than a tongue lashing from the wife I promise.
Every piece you do is practice for the next one so Keep Practicing!

Got some cedar today.
gonna start after I put the kiddies to bed.
Will let you know in a couple of days how it turns out

So here is my second attempt.

Used a 6in piece of cedar.
as far as tools i used a small straight 85deg curved chisel, a 3/8in scoop a 1/8in scoop and some fine grit SP for the finishing along with a dremel for evening out the base, getting rid of a few rough spots and a general smoothing.
Any tips or whatnots would be appreciated.

Well, during paintball practice last Saturday, my friend shot me in the leg from about a foot away because he wasn't minding his trigger finger while messing with a jam during a game on the field.
Therefor, during the last game, when he charged me, I showed no mercy.
This is my artistic interpretation of what he looked like as one of my rounds hit him in the neck.

This is just a 30 minute piece as a gagf on my friends "Glorious" mustache
I used Elmers to glue some of the bark back on as the facial "hair"

No, he is not.
