What do you do when the economy is in the dumper? Well if you’re not thinking straight you decide to return to stand-up and a working vacation in Fabulous Las Vegas!! But in July? Sure!! Where you then proceed to eat it twice a night in front of people who actually paid to be there. In July! It didn't really matter though since I was in Las Vegas for the first time in 2 years and there were new things to see. Tiki-Kate stopped in for a little while and we checked out BLT Burger at the Mirage - WOW that place is good!! I ate there more than once but would have preferred to have eaten there every day. How about Frankie’s Tiki Room? - What an AWESOME place that is! Good drinks! Fantastic atmosphere, 106° outside and maybe 65° inside? Great job Bamboo Ben. Plus I was able to get some of the new Moss swizzles!

I also tried the Rhumbar at the Mirage and I can't say enough good things about it. The cocktails I had - The 1944 Mai Tai, The Hemingway Daiquiri, a Caipirinha and The Tortonga were all excellent! Is it Tiki? No but they serve their Scorpions in Mai-Kai bowls, If that helps. :)

A: Only on the Tahiti Joe’s Mai Tai.

A: No.

Great travelogue, Boris. Las Vegas is one of my favorite decadent escape places. And I love how dark Frankie's is. Everyone looks good in that light.

Baking in Bakersfield

Q: Why Bakersfield?
A: Well Bakersfield is home to Bill Lee’s Bamboo Chopsticks, as in Bill Lee’s Bamboo Chopsticks O.M.C. Three Face Bucket Mug fame.

Knowing it was still there we had to take a look, it’s more like a P.F. Chang’s now with Terra Cotta Soldiers instead of bamboo but the food was good and the Mai Tai (Kinda Fruity but finished strong.) came in a coconut mug so I was happy. In a place like this you start thinking the thrift stores must be filled with those bucket mugs right? Wrong! and now I know that if you think Tiki-Kate is going to concentrate on finding shirts while you can concentrate on finding mugs you’d be wrong, WAY WRONG! I zigged when I should of zagged and Kate finds a Trader Vic’s skull mug! :o In Bakersfield? :o I’ll go start the car.

Q: Okay seriously why Bakersfield?
A: If that’s not enough for you then how about the Rice Bowl sign next door to Bill Lee’s? You gotta love that.

Q: You know this is Tiki Central and Not Giant Restaurant Sign Central right?
A: Fine you want Tiki’s we went looking for Tiki’s ~ the Lanai Gardens has some and even though it looks like they’ve seen much better days they’re still very cool. Speaking of cool it’s like 100° out here and we’re 2 hours from home so I'll go start the car.

So after a couple of false starts late last year I was finally able to make it to Smugglers Cove and it was worth the wait because... I LOVE THIS PLACE and can’t wait to get back! (Picture Martin shuddering)

So let me tell you about Smuggler’s Cove - you know the Kick-Ass Rum Bar! Oh sure Captain Hook would feel at home here but so would Captains Cook, Bligh and Crunch as well as John Paul Jones (Both the Revolutionary War Hero and the Led Zeppelin Bassist) I did see some Tikis in there and they looked very much at home but I’m going to call it a Kick-Ass Rum Bar I really don’t think you can go wrong with that.

When I walked in I was greeted by friends - The Midnites, Tikitastic, Notch, Rum Runner and Coco Loco they all agreed that I needed a drink (Keep in mind I was only going to have 2, oh and that I was in a bar.) So still working on my collection of Mai Tai pictures I started with a Mai Tai –

Reza: What can I get you? (Or something like that)

Me: Just a Mai Tai.

Reza: Oh it won’t be "Just a Mai Tai"

and it wasn’t, it was a magically delicious Mai Tai - Thank you Reza!

With my Mai Tai in hand Notch gave me a tour, it is an amazing place, on the upper deck I really like looking out at the armada of fish float lamps, in my opinion it's the best view in the city.
On the main deck the hunt for the 6 skulls kept me busy for part of the night, on the lower level I was greeted by both L.A. friends (Bigbro, Naomi, Kevin and Jody) and San Francisco friends (Mai Tai, Rebecca, Martin and Otto)

My drink was finished and it was time for another - The Rum Barrel was chosen and didn’t disappoint it was tasty and lasted a while. - Thank you Reza!

Things get a little blurry after that - a Fog Cutter - Thank you Reza! Somewhere near the end there was a Cuba Libre - Thank you Reza! And I think a glass of water - Thank you Reza! I remember spilling swizzles in the street as everyone had loaded me up with them, I was a little top heavy but got them all back to my room safely. What a great night, thanks everyone I look forward to going back…but maybe not on the ridiculously awful Bay to Breakers weekend!

I was in Nor. Cal. for the Tikiyaki event.
but there wasn't enough time for a SC visit,
so close yet so far away.

Tiki-Kate and I were summoned to the North to witness the ancient ritual of marriage between two of our friends Humuhumu and Trott, it was a fabulous wedding - on the coldest day of the year but when you’re surrounded by good friends and people you care about it was …. STILL FREEZING! :lol: I’m really happy that Kate was able to attend the wedding and also visit Smugglers Cove, I know it was important to her.

While at the wedding we attended what I’m calling the Ultra-Soft Opening of Rich and Humu’s home bar the Balhi Hai. If the preview was anything like it'll be once completed, it will be pretty special, I’ve heard it was decorated in a hurry by Non-Tikiphile civilians and they did a great job, I’ve only seen some of Humu’s collection but I know she has a fantastic eye for things and even as it was with only some fish nets and a few wall pieces by Woofmutt it’s fantastic! Throw in cocktails from Reza Esmaili, a punch conjured up by Martin Cate and there is no way this place could go wrong, there were even super delicious appetizers floating around. I can’t wait to get back.*

*I’m not sure if Reza and Martin will be there every night (I don't see why not?) but I would hope that if they heard I was in the area they’d drop what they were doing to head over and make me some drinks. :D
