If I had to choose just one event (Tiki or otherwise) to attend each year, this would be it.

It's awesome in its PURITY !! :)

[ Edited by: JOHN-O 2012-03-28 17:50 ]

Surfs up you Gremmies! nice line up Jeff.

That's right up the street from me, awesome!

Maybe I can stowaway in 9th Wave's suitcase!

S

Looking forward to this!!!

Thanks for the post John O,
and thanks for the replies guys.
they always say surf is a sausage fest.
:o

By the way, this is one week before Tiki Oasis.
So if you can, and if yer coming from far away.
Take off a whole 9 day week, and do both.
Then hit the beach, Disneyland, etc, and all the Tiki bars in So.Cal.
During the mid week days between this and Tiki Oasis.

I had about 20 people at Tiki Oasis last year,
tell me that they were at the SG101 convention also, and came early to go to it.
I was blown away, needless to say.

Event Advertising Designer, Jonpaul Balak, states,
"People know that if they want an excellent show during a prime time for travel,
the Surf Guitar 101 Convention is the ultimate destination. With Huntington Beach nearby, other great shows, and Tiki Oasis the following weekend, you can’t go wrong.”

see some reviews of the Madeira's Tribal Fires cd in this TC thread here:
http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=42474&forum=11&start=last&3

It would be worth coming to this event, just to see this band alone.
then the other 7 are no slouches either.

That the spirit of Tiki Ohana. Everyone can enjoy and Win.

I am so ready for this!!!

Huh ?? The Tiki Oasis thread started well before this one and the 2 events are only a week apart. Oh well at least you have plenty of time to come up with an excuse. :D

GROG = Surf Music hater. :(

I'll tell you what Ernie, show up and I'll pay for your entry. :)

Be still my guitar geeky little heart! I'm so there :D

Great Line Up!

I know. That's even CRAZIER! Although, that one usually REALLY does require a lot of planning, reserving hotel rooms, etc. and has a lot more people coming from abroad.

GROG may have to make it out to this one, though.

Groggy,
of the 300 or so that came to the SG101 convention last year.
besides the bands from out of town, and Europe,
I'd say that about 50 of the spectators were not from So. Cal.

and there is a great Motel down the Street, for Cheep,
Don's turf motel,
can you say Surf n Turf?

plus there is the 3 bar shows the night before the event,
and the HB pier show the day after the event.

Why wouldn't people that enjoy surf and tiki,
not wanna come out for the whole 9 day week,
and do this, and Tiki Oasis?

BIGtikidude,

I've attended the last two SG101 shows, the pre shows in San Diego and post shows at DTB. I plan on doing the same this year. It is a super cool deal!

Last year I had a buddy fly out from Maryland for a tiki event (that will remain unnamed) scheduled for the weekend after the SG101 show. My buddy flew out early in time to make the Friday night pre sg101 show in San Diego and we both attended the convention and DTB show. That was his first time to DTB and he was really stoked on the whole scene and experience in the Dagger bar that night. Sick tunes, killer food and an original DTB zombie. It was perfect except for the long car ride back home. It was nice to share such a bitchin scene like that with a good old friend who appreciated it. Other than having drinks at Bali Hai this was his first tiki experience and my most memorable for sure!

So for me, Having a family, being budget minded, and attempting to get folks in from the right coast, I appreciate the early heads-up.

However, I also understand the need for a larger polynesian themed event held in SD to be considerate of it's attendees and post limited information and dates as early as possible. I appreciate that too.

As mentioned earlier in this thread the large poly pop themed weekend requires planning ahead like booking a hotel room. It woudl be nice if this large event with lots of attendees was in an area with amble lodging options so finding a room wouldn't be such an issue. Maybe it should be moved from Hotel Circle North to Hotel Circle South? :)

For the record, I've attended the large San Diego event many many times and will be doing the same this year. I look forward to it every year. I enjoy it an appreciate all the effort put into it. It is a wonderful experience. I pretty much think it's perfect just the way it is.

BTD, live long, post early and post often

Late!

"I'm the asshole. sorry, everyone" Trent Walker

Sofa King,

thanks for the post and the heads up.
did we meet last year?
I vaguely recall possibly meeting you at Dons on Sunday.
but the weekend is a blur.

I think its cool that you guys did both weekend events,
and hope that more will do the same.

cheers
Jeff(btd)

SK

BTD,

We didn't talk that night at Dons. We have chatted a handful of times usually at San Diego shows.

I really enjoy attending both events. I feel fortunate to do so.

It's getting closer!

I will be there (but don't let that be a deterrent, folks!)

This is probably one of the better surf rock events, and probably because Jeff Big Wookie Dude does an excellent job of setting the whole thing up. I won't be at oasis, but I will be here!

Thanks Jason

and Thanks Lucas,
but its surf music, not Surf Rock.

T

If you bring the banana laden go-go girls to the Disasternauts SG101 After-Party show at The Doll Hut I think we could overlook some head banging...

Really Looking forward to having the Florida bands at the event this year.
Can't wait, but please, no poo flinging.

oh, and don't think the Disasternauts corner the market on Gorilla masks,
The Pyronauts from Sacramento area get in on that too, but alas they are not playing this year. :(

Jeff(btd)

I didn't know ape was playing

har!!!

as much as I like Ape, and other Tiki bands,
read John O's post above or on the previous page.
He says the great think about the SG101 convention,
is it's purity and not mixing genres of music or sub cultures.

Even though tiki is a bigger sub culture than surf,
there are way more surf bands than tiki bands.
So I am able to pick from the best each year to bring the people
a truly great show, and diverse mix of bands from around the USA,
and 2 European bands.

Jeff(btd)

A friend of Jonpaul and I, who lives in Australia
just sent me a e-mail saying he and his wife are planning on
flying to So. Cal. to come to Tiki Oasis and SG101 convention.

Love it when people go Hard Core like that!

Jeff(btd)

Update...

The Rumblers will be performing at the convention for the first time in almost 50 years !!

Unbelievable. What a historic event. :)

thanks for the update/bump John O

I talked to a good amount of people at Tiki Caliente 4 that said they are gonna come to the Surf Guitar 101 convention.

Jeff(btd)

I have been getting inquiries about the cost of the event,
and what about pre-sale tix.

We are not selling tix in advance, if you are coming from far away,
(Nor. Cal. or out of state)and want to be assured a ticket to the event.
Please e-mail me directly at [email protected], and I will put you on a list of guaranteed entrants.

The Cost for the Convention this year will be 30 dollars.
Considering that the cost of The Guitar Geek Fest is 55 or 60 dollars,
and Tiki Oasis is between 70 and 105 plus dollars.
I don't think that I am gouging the attendees. I hope that everyone understand that there is 2 European bands, and 4 bands that are coming from East of the Rocky mountains, and The cost of travel these days is not cheep. I would like to be able to pay the bands well to help cover those costs. 10 Hours divided by 30 dollars is 3 dollars an hour.
Is that really that much?

Thanks for understanding.
Jeff(bigtikidude)

TM

Nothing to explain, Jeff. I was at the last event...and you clearly know how to throw a good party. 30 bucks for all those bands is well worth it.
I also know that most of the bands you showcase represent the best of the genre.

Thanks Lucas,
I really appreciate that.

$30 is still a fantastic price for the line-up, I'd pay twice that and still feel like I was getting a fair deal.

Again I'd encourage anyone who has even a casual or passing interest in Surf Music to attend. This isn't just 'Old Guys in Bad Hawaiian Shirts' playing "Pipeline" and "Wipeout" over and over, this Third (Fourth?) Wave of Surf music is really innovative and exciting. It's like what Tikiyaki Orchestra has done with Exotica music, taken a mid-century genre and updated it (vs. imitating it) while still retaining its "soul".

Also the (pre-Surf) Rumblers and (THE 2nd-Wave pioneer) Jon & the Nightriders reunions will be very rare appearances, not to mention the visiting European bands.

Los Alamitos is right around the corner for me. I'm not going to T.O this year, but I think I may have to make this event.

Wow!!
thanks guys

Jeff, great line up and thanks for working with me (Tiki Oasis) in trying to cross-book the out of town bands so they can put together a tour. We were able to offer gigs to Los Venturas and The Exotics. Unfortunately, The Barbwires were not able to stay a week in order to make both gigs so they are only playing at Tiki Oasis.

Surf music fans, I cannot encourage you enough to mark this historic show on your calendars.
The Barbwires will be playing tunes from their epic SeaRider CD

http://www.myspace.com/thebarbwires
http://www.the-barbwires.com/

Mike sent me this photo last week. Summer is near and The Barbwires are excited to play Southern California, but they are only playing this one show - Tiki Oasis Friday night, August 17

San Francisco (Otto) meets Stockholm (Mike Barbwire)

Otto,
My pleasure, its been great working with you.
I too was bummed that Mike and the Barbwires cannot make SG101,
but super stoked that they are playing at Tiki Oasis.

I have seen them before and they are AMAZING, and a MUST SEE.
Get Yer Tix to see the Barbwires at Tiki OASIS 12 now.

So stoked for this.

Just added to the Event, in the Legends of Surf Jam.
The Nocturnes, Feat. Jim Frias on sax.
(Some of you may know him from sitting in with the Hula Girls)

Here is a pic of him at Don's holding the cd of the Noctunres Rare Surf vol. 2
that they are on.

If you can find either one of these cds, get them,
The Nocturnes recordings were never released in the 60s,
but a lot of bands have covered Some of the Nocturnes songs,
mainly 3 rd star to the Left.

Rare Surf Vol. 2

or

American Surf Treasures Vol. 2
