The place is still under construction, but the posters on the windows say "Mister Tiki's Mai Tai Lounge"..."Coming Spring 2004". It is right across the streen from the famous Croce's Restaurant & Jazz bar. . THe spot used to be a posh Italian eatery.

Fio's was a posh Italian restaurant which, along with Croce's, and then Ole Madrid, put the Gas Lamp on the map. Bring it on! There are other Italian restaurants (SFuzzi) but no other tiki, although the W Hotel has the Book of Tiki in the downstairs lobby bar and features a beach scence bar on the roof.

Hans Richter, president of the Corte Madera-based Trader Vic's, confirmed by telephone that he and David Cohn discussed opening up a San Diego franchise of the tropical Asian restaurant. But Richter said Cohn decided to whip up his own version of the concept that Victor Jules Bergeron created in the late 1930s, spawning such goodies as crab Rangoon and the mai tai. The Cohns did not return repeated calls for comment. Whatever the new venture is, it will bring the number of Cohn restaurants in San Diego County to nine." This must have been what a local carver was talking about at the Pacific Islander Festival. He told me he was trying to get a piece of the action doing decor at a new downtown Trader Vics. Fio's was a posh Italian restaurant which, along with Croce's, and then Ole Madrid, put the Gas Lamp on the map.

Bring it on! There are other Italian restaurants (SFuzzi) but no other tiki, although the W Hotel has the Book of Tiki in the downstairs lobby bar and features a beach scence bar on the roof.
