Note to self: when selecting logs to carve, take notice of any bug holes...

If there are large holes in the log more than likely there is something large that made the hole! This came crawling out of one of these holes!! And he wasn't alone.

I bet you wish you had a walk-in freezer to put all of your carving in for the night.

Hope that's not actual size.

Nice third leg on that muddler up above.. Something familiar about that one roughed out on the far left.

Well. this is not spot on but,
it is different & it is Tiki.
If you don't think it's Tiki
I bet you know who to see about that.

That's pretty darned funny. Good job. After Aug. 28th, though, you'll have to put scar on the chest from the open heart surgery. :D

that big piece of cypress must have taken a lot out of you, because you've been makin' tiny stuff ever since,... lol...

looks like I need to make another trip up to Dade City to snag a few more rootballs. I'll definitely have one for you on this next run. The last trip I took my Tundra up there with Orlando & 2 was all we could manage. I'm goin' back up there with my truck AND Orlando's Dodge 2500 with a cummins, and like 2 more dudes, so I should be able to get back here with 4 or 5 of 'em on the next round. jesus....those things are heavy...

I need to go visit the wise one here soon, so maybe I could drag your log down there with me & you could meet me in PSL with your rig to scoop it?

I've started a new project.
This hair ball's 11 ft long.
So far I've snapped it in 1/2
the long ways.
We're looking for 2 masks here.

I'd forgotten the joy of carving palm.
Hard wood, it's hard.
Mask-1 is ruffed out.

Fantastic as usual Will, the detail will really pop once it's painted.

I'm starting to really fall in love with freshly cut cypress... between the grain lines, the way it stains, the longevity, and the fact that it's very "florida", I'm kinda smitten...

dude you were SO RIGHT about the difference between carving it wet & carving it dry... like 2 completely different kinds of wood!!!

I'm kinda moving toward doing most of my stuff in cypress..

and it's funny how high end "money people" perk up and pay attention when you talk about doing stuff in cypress....

but yeah, palm is fun... :)

I'm done for now with #1.
It's a PNG style mask being held/worn by this lil guy.

I like carving fresh wet palm but,
it needs to go thru the mold/mildew stage & dry
be for I can ad stain & poly.

Hairball #2 is done.
It's hard to show detail in pics
of tall thin stuff.
After they dry I will give them color
& glaze rub to make the detail pop.

They are kinda the same but different.
As shown here by the lovely & talented
6 ft tall Aloha Station.

The one in the middle could use a little more carving but the 2 outside ones are perfect!
What's the purpose of the pointed base?

H

Just like Swizzle said, your last 2 pieces are fantastic. I love rootball tikis and yours are one of the best I have seen.

It's just a base to stand on.
I really feel like Tikis should be looked up to.
I always want them as tall as the wood is.
I did have to cut them to 7&1/2 ft
to get them in my house & trim the base &
hollowed out the back to lighten them up.

So now I'm working on a pendant.
It's kinda big but its a birthday prez for
a guy that bar tends in a Tiki Bar.
He's a wild man, I'm sure he can pull it off.
I'll make it paper thin so it'll be light.

you gonna paint or stain those hair-ball halfies?

WC
Will carve posted on 10/23/2013

The hairballs get stain & poly but,
only after they mold/mildew & dry.

So this is done.
It's a lil goofy,
but so is the birthday girl
that he's for.
