Five years ago, Swingin' Tikis decided to celebrate their Ten Year
Anniversary in style by turning their performance into a benefit for
the Huntington Beach International Surf Museum (HBISM) and the Santa
Barbara Surf Museum. The event was a huge success and they were able
to donate $1000.00 to the HBISM and $300.00 to the Santa Barbara Surf
Museum. This year, the local kings of Surf Party Rock have goals of
doubling both of those numbers and feel confident they will do so,
judging by the early buzz and tremendous support and prize donations
from local merchants and restaurants. Swingin' Tikis are best known
for their raucous live shows which have been known to include the
members balancing full beers on their heads while performing, live
percussion parades and guitarists who play upside down while hanging
from their knees. Their CD release -"Vintage Surf Tunes" - has had
cuts featured on various surf, skate and snowboarding videos as well
as the HBISM's own "Surfin' Sundays" compilation CD.

Normally I would not include an event such as this in my listings as
it is a "non-Tiki" event
but seeing as the event itself is so incredibly amazing and the
promoter (Kim from Scram)
is very cool, I feel compeelled to endorse and pass along the info of
this event - Otto vS

The Bubblegum Queen and the editors of "Bubblegum Music is the Naked
Truth" invite you to share a very special evening at Hollywood's Magic
Castle on January 18, 2003. It's the First Annual Bubblegum Achievement
Awards, honoring Artie Ripp of Buddah Records and the Turtles' Mark
Volman, for his work on the astonishing Strawberry Shortcake records,
which gave '80s kids a powerful injection of bubblemania.

Also appearing are Bobby Conn, Monotrona and the scientific magic of
David Lovering. Your ticket entitles you to a gourmet meal, a reserved
seat for the main show in the Palace of Mystery, and entry to the
private Inner Sanctum for the awards themselves. There will be dancing
to DJ Gremmy's collection of vintage 45s, karaoke, contests with neat-o
prizes, a full bar (from the set of "Hello Dolly!") and rare videos
screening until midnight, after which we'll move back upstairs to enjoy
more magic shows, history and tippling until the 2pm closing time.

The Magic Castle is a private magician's club housed in a 1908 mansion
in the hills above Hollywood. Usually the only way to get inside is to
be a member, or to be personally invited by a member. And unlike some
private clubs, this one is worth all the trouble it takes to get in. The
atmosphere is pure Charles Addams, and you can spend hours examining the
film and magic memorabilia.

The cost for all of the night's entertainment including your meal, tip
and tax, is just $69, or $135 for two. Drinks are extra. We will be
limited to just 129 guests, the max capacity of the Palace of Mystery.

If you would like to attend this special event, please email The Editrix
at [email protected] to reserve your spot and send a check or
money order payable to "Kim Cooper" to PO Box 461626, Hollywood, CA
90046-1626. Again, that's $69 for each individual ticket, or $135 for
two. Tickets are non-refundable, but if "something suddenly comes up" we
can probably help match you with someone on the waiting list. The Magic
Bubble will burst on Saturday January 18, 2003. This event is 21 and
over, and is subject to a mildly classy dress code.

Isn't David Lovering the drummer for "The Pixies"? I saw him as an opening act for Frank Black at The Coach House, he was a total riot!
