new tiki-tropical fountain

Pages: 1 2 replies

hello everyone:

i've been lurking on these boards on and off and have been
enjoying what everyone has made. i have built up an outdoor
tiki bar several months ago and now am building a medium
sized above ground pond/fountain.

i picked up the famous belgium peeing boy statue
and am looking to dress him up
in appropriate clothing for tiki parties.

what do you think?

any advice? according to my math, it will hold a little over 500 gallons of water.
i still need to pick up the pump and liner.
i am looking for some ideas on making this a decorative addition to my backyard.
i hope to stock it with colorful small fish.

the walls are about 18 inches tall and are brick, but i am looking to finish them
with some nice looking laminate rock.

the back wall is going to be a 'wall of water' and the boy will be
also be peeing to help oxegenate and move
water around. i am not in a hurry to build it and am looking
to get some good advice on making it
look great.

thanks again for this great forum and i look forward to your advice.

thanks for looking

The pond idea sounds tops.

Placing plants around the edges of the water softens the edges and gives it a more natural feel. This will also give it a 'wild' kinda feel if that is how you want to go.

Lighting can also be used to great effect. An underwater spotlight will light up the boys stream and the boy as well. This or down lights for the wall of water would work too.

Place the pickup for the little boy at the opposite end of the pond to make sure the water circulates. Also make sure you get a pump with an inbuilt filter. You could go a full biological filter, but that is probably overboard for that size pond. Most pumps come with an inbuilt filter that is good enough.

Fish work well in a pond too.Bright fish get eaten by birds, but you cant see black fish, which defeats the purpose...You can put wire over it but that is real ugly.

cool- thanks for the advice. it's definately going to have colored lights that are submerged and also some landscape lighting.
(all low voltage)

i wanted the pond to be above ground
so toddlers wouldn't fall into it.

I am looking for a source of some fishing
nets and glass floats. any ideas? i live by
santa cruz and i guess i should hit up the flea markets.

thanks for the advice.

michele.
