What with all the rain, and the flooded santa ana river (which I work 50 feet away from) I have come across tons and tons of bamboo. Several samples I have pulled from the river are of excellent quality and color, very hard, seem like they are almost varnished. Some of the green pieces are huge! One I found was about 20 feet long! I would think if anyone ran a company making either shakuhachis or saxophone reeds they would only need to take a net to the mouth of the river in huntington beach, and just start scooping! It's truly amazing!! So far, i have about 20 quality specimens. This type of bamboo is considered a pest in our river systems in SoCal, and not native. Critics say they are clogging the riverbed, and they are voracious drinkers that grow an inch a day! Most of them have been washed out of thier beds, though, as I lost count of how many pieces were floating by. If Bong goes surfing this weekend, he better wear a helmet! |
