Two bands who played the great tiki event in Palm Springs this last summer, The Maikai Gents and Lushy. Please note, Lushy, who are from Seattle are coming all the way to LA for this show only! Dionysus will be releasing a record by this band in Feb. of 2003. Cover for this night will be $4.00 Sunday, October 27 - LIVE AT THE LODGE - EXOTICA NIGHT! THE MAIKAI GENTS featuring The Mysterious MISS MAUNA LOA and, from Seattle, LUSHY. Guest DJ Lu from Seattle and DJ Lee LUSHY is Basement Lounge. Hailing from Seattle, the band brews up a jam sound decanted from 2 parts lounge and one part Tiki. The result is music for both listening and dancing. Together for the past two years practicing and recording in a studio, that is, in fact, a basement lounge (with fully-stocked cocktail bar!), Lushy has produced original compositions and arrangements, dipping into musical influences from exotica, ska, and lounge, to punk, French pop, and Latin. Lushy consists of Andy Sodt (keyboards,melodica, sax, flute, timbales), Annabella Kirby (vocals, percussion,clarinet), Matt Nims (bass, drums, guitar), Brad Chodos-Irvine (congas, bongos, percussion), Jeff McGrath (trumpet, slide guitar). LUSHY was the fabulous stars of the Palm Springs tiki event this past summer! Spend an enchanted evening under a bright moon on a secluded beach beside gently lapping waves sheltered by a swaying palm tree as you swoon to the romantic crooning of THE MAIKA'I GENTS. Their lilting melodies will call you to the shimmering shores of Hawaii and evoke the spirit of the Islands' golden yesteryears. Born from an unlikely heritage, The Maika'i Gents are the former Ronnie Twirl and Johnny Riff, founders of the lounge-punk pioneering The El Guapos. Embracing their life-long enchantment with the Hawaiian Islands they have become Iuka Grogg (vocals and ukulele) and Mika'ele Loco Moco (guitar and vocals), the caressing grass skirt and swaying hips of The Mysterious Miss Mauna Loa as well as the provocative bass styling of former Witchdoctors, Finks and Bomboras and current The Satisfaction guitar great, Lord Hunt. "Sweet and gentle like the morning mist over the Pali, honest and humble like the fishermen of Hana, The Maika'i Gents are simply disarming by presenting their renditions without irony, mirroring the sincerity of Polynesian children.
