On this day in 1935 Wallace Carothers invented nylon, thus making possible the modern "silky" style Hawaiian, or Aloha, Shirt.

Hey Freelance, I read (Urban Myth?) that nylon was named as an abriv. for New York and LONdon...is this...could this be...tru?

I remember the first time I slipped on my mom's nylons...fond memories for sure. Gotta go, wife coming...

Nope. There's also an urban myth that it stands for "Now You, Lazy Old Nippon," a swipe at the Japanese (Nipon) chemical industry that DuPont was at "war" with. According to DuPont they originally wanted to call it "No Run" but the marketing people didn't like it, so they changed the letters at random coming up with "Nyl" and adding "on" to sound like Cotton or Rayon.
