I don't know who wanted the Fanzine interviews translated from French to English bur Mattieu Oxbow has posted it as a Word doc. FLASH-BACK Our last issue was a flash-back in the 60’s with garage bands. For this issue, we’re going to travel to the Isles and interest ourselves for Tiki. It was a very important theme in American culture of the 50’s: when soldiers based in the Pacific Ocean for the WWII came back home, they brought with them a part of this culture… TIKI ? You don’t know what is a Tiki but you unavoidably saw one ! Tiki comes from the other side of the world. To simplify it represents a god with bulging eyes, an enormous mouth… If you know Easter Island and his statues, then you can imagine what a Tiki is basically. Surf movement plays a lot with that myth: bikinis, beaches, tikis and so on (i.e. movie Psycho Beach Party). For more infos on the different Tiki types, the Bible of Tiki, “The Book of Tiki” will explain you all you need to know ! Now we’re going to discover the relatively unknown universe of Tiki (well we speak for France) towards 3 artists: an illustrator, 2 carvers. They’ll explain where their fascination come from, how they work, for who… take your tools! KONKLUSION Passion, mystery and magic… Interviews you’ll read will give you a more precise idea of all that is related to Tiki Culture. You’ll appreciate the popular side of this culture, today supported by nostalgic people, curious people… Is Tiki back ? RESOURCES: http://www.tikicentral.com the excellent Tiki forum Some worthy sites too: http://tiki-lounge.skynetblogs.be French-speaking people and their researches on Tikis. I'm not sure people knew it was there and available. I think it may be too long to post on TC what do othes think. |
