Tiki Carving Question - Help needed

I just completed carving my first tiki and now I wanted to ask those with experience - how do I go about getting that blackened burn effect on the inside contours of the tikis face? Do I pour lighter fluid on it and let it burn or do I use a torch and burn the areas in a more uniform manner - let me know...
