Being the former SW geek that I am, the names given the ships were originally only used by the special effects crew and grew to become common names for those ships. Nowhere in the first SW movie do they mention "TIE fighter" or "X-wing" fighter, but they are called those in TESB. As for "twin ion engine", I think this is a case of making up a name after the fact out of the letters "t-i-e", which was originally used to describe the shape of the ship (like a bow-tie). Geek mode off. |
