Maori Art in San Francisco August 2005

I read an ad in the San Francisco Chronicle about an upcoming Maori art show in SF.
the ad stated; "MAORI ART MEETS AMERICA- Experience the unique and contemporary
art of New Zealand's origianl people @ Yerba Buena Center for The Arts Forum. 701 Mission St
@ 3rd. Aug 5-14 FREE>"

Also a Maori weaving show will be part of this and touring Seattle Washington, Salem and Warm Springs, Oregon.

I saw the Tibet exhibit at the Asian Art Museum last weekend and it was fantastic. Buddhalicious!

We would also have to visit SFMOMA, which is across the street from where the Maori exhibit will be. The Cartoon Art Museum is also in the neighborhood.

I'm going to see this Maori exhibit. Details later.

We're going on the 6th of Aug. Getting on BART in Pleasanton. I want to see City Lights also. Can't wait.

Next to City lights is Vesuvio (a bar)http://www.vesuvio.com/ and across from City Lights is Specs Adler Musuem (actually a bar!) and Tosca Cafe(another bar).

Subject: Native American and Maori (New Zealand) dancers unite at Yerba
Buena 8/6

As part of Kia Ora - San Francisco (the Maori way of saying "hello SF")
New
Zealand events in San Francisco during August will include dancers from
the
Te Puia Kapa Haka Maori Dance Ensemble who will perform in Yerba Buena
Gardens, Thursday - Saturday & Tuesday - Wednesday, August 4, 5, 6, 9,
10,
from 12:30pm to 1:30 pm.

The performances will consist of both traditional and contemporary
dances
with melodies ranging from monologue chants to beautifully composed
songs. The Haka, a war dance is performed by men; Poi is a dance
performed
with a ball on the end of a string; Waiata-a-ringa is an action song;
Tirakau is
performed with long sticks; and Tititoria is performed with short
sticks.

The dancers have performed extensively throughout the world.

On Saturday, August 6, the Te Puia Kapa Haka Maori Dance Ensemble will
be joined by Native American dancers in a dance exchange in Yerba
Buena
Gardens as a component of the Yerba Buena Gardens Festival.

The performance are all FREE and open to the public

A canoe of Maori warriors from New Zealand paddle past a pier and toward shore at Aquatic Park at dawn in San Francisco, on Aug. 4. The Maori, who were met by Native American Ohlone tribe members, made the visit to kick off the opening of one of the largest collections of Maori art to be shown in the U.S. at San Francisco's Yerba Buena Center for the Arts and to encourage Americans to visit the Pacific island nation.
