What do you hate that most people like?

Let's try and keep the thread civilized. Everyone is entitled to their opinions...

I'll start:

Elvis Costello. Sorry. Someday I may come around. Maybe.

mushrooms

sushi, sashimi, fish, etc.

Big sunglasses - people look like freakin bugs, especially the scrawny 'socialites'

More Australian specific - Vegemite, cricket, beer.

  1. Flavored Coffee, coffee is a flavor, the stronger the better. Hazelnut belongs in hazel, or where ever it comes from.

  2. Co-Workers photos of Children...if I wanted to see a freek show, I'd go to the circus. I actually like when people have pictures at their desk or workstation, but given half a chance, every bit of wallspace becomes baby updateland...for every relative of everybody, on every vacation, in every minivan.

  3. The Cereal and Cat food aisles at the store...all those faces give me the willies. The cat has to get his own cereal at our house, I wont go down that aisle.

  4. Moronic news shows that ask children what they think of complex issues.

Football (soccer)
Cricket
Sushi
Sashimi

Ha ha! You and my ex-girlfriend both.

She and I would have endless debates on this movie. I loved it; she was absolutely appalled by it.

"George should have gone and travelled the world and did what He wanted to do. It's his own fault if he's unappy in Bedford Falls." she would say.

"But he has to learn the lesson of how to be grateful for what he already has, see? Until he learns that lesson, he'll be dissatisfied wherever he goes." I countered.

"Bulls#$t. His brother left the family to do what he wanted to do and was happy. The brother's the real hero of this story. George should have done the same thing."

"But what about this father's business going under if he doesn't take it over?"

"Since when is that his problem or responsiblity? His only responsibility is to his own happiness."

And so it went. My girlfriend was an Ayn Rand Objectivist and I was a Protestant Christian. This movie brought out the core differences in our philosophies (which really aren't so different in most other respects). I loved debating it with her. We had lots of fun, honestly. Still, she nearly walked out of the movie during the intermission, first time we saw it together. It's "lame-brained" philosophy was really more than she could stomach.

Cola.

cola is a nut. who in their right mind would want to drink nut-flavored soda pop? why did cashew or mac nut sodas never catch on? was it the the absence of cocaine?

I dont' understand the appeal of the cola "flavor." it's not even real - just some phospates and what not. it's chemicals and water!!!

I can understand the need for caffeine once in a while, which is what coffee and tea are for - those seem to me to be more natural products.

I only drink cola when I need the caffeine and am very very desperate, and can alter the flavor and carbonation effects with a wedge of lime, and hopefully some rum.

Ah yes. I like Tiki Bob. Mr Bali Hai on the other hand...

Driving badly. I don't just hate it in others, I hate it when I do it myself. I went to driving school when I learned, I've attended California Traffic Schools 1/2 a dozen times, I've driven cross country (LA/NY, LA/Chicago) about 20-30 times, and I can put 100,000 miles on my car in a year so I've seen alot of good driving & alot of bad driving, and I've heard alot of excuses for doing both. I still hate bad drivers.

Concerning "It's a Wonderful Life"...When George first comes off the bridge and stumbles into Pottersville, there is jazz music coming out of 4 or 5 bars. Pottersville is awesome; Bedford Falls sucks.

M

Watermelon.
I can't stand it.

But I do like artificial watermelon flavor (think jolly rancher watermelon).

Don't want to upset anyone, cuz I know most of you tikiphiles like it, but...I've never liked that "hang loose" hand sign thing. When I see it, it takes me back to high school and "Yo man, Dave's not here."

Bob Dylan's music.

  • Cute animals in hats filmed through a wide-angle lens.

  • Fudge... LOVE chocolate -- HATE fudge. I'll take a brownie or piece of chocolate cake any day.

  • Candy corn.

  • Loud Harleys. Trust me, that sound does NOT mix with our band when playing outdoor gigs, no matter what key we're in, or what song we're playing.

  • Fake boobs. Ughh...

  • SWEET rum drinks. Now, before you freak out, I mean the ones that set my teeth on edge. Some are just too sweet for me. But I'm kind of new to these (beer drinker), so maybe I'll come around to the sweeter ones. OTOH, I LOVE the various grogs, and other fruity rum drinks that have more sour/bitter mixed in with a wee bit of sweet (and have FRESH MINT, of course). Mmmmmm...

Aloha....

The Dude

I hate goat cheese. Once when I was in France, I embarrassed my friends and insulted my hosts by spitting out a mouthful into a napkin. It just tastes so wrong in my mouth.

T

Superfluous apostrophes. Examples:
"Bicycle's for rent!"
"$1.00 beer's during Happy Hour!"
ARGGHH! The apostrophe is for possession, not plurals! When did this become an optional, either-or matter? I was not consulted...

J

Poker - Recently I bit the bullet and went through the torture of giving it a try. I felt like such an idiot being taught what hand beats what and afterwards my "teacher" gave me this stupid little cheat sheet so I'd remember it all. So I finally got the concept of what I needed to do and was all psyched thinking I'd be really into it but within a half hour I ended up being bored out of my mind. I eventually turned in all of my chips and excused myself from the table so that I could fall asleep on the couch.

T

I agree re: poker. I live near a casino resort area and all the hype surrounding poker strikes me as being all about "recruiting" newcomers to put their chips on the table (and lose them). To quote Dennis Miller, "If my yawn were any bigger right now, they'd have to assign it a hurricane name!" Actually I've never played. Hey, to each his own though.

Poker, yeah. That reminds me of how I hate going over to people's houses and they keep pushing me to play an interactive game with them like Charades, Pictionary, or Trivial Pursuit...aaaaagh! Runaway!

Mediocrity....

Let the "must be hard to look in the mirror" jokes begin...

and ...?

OK, sometimes Dylan is better in theory than in practice, you might say. But when others do his songs... There is a CD set called "Postcards from the Hanging" which is the Grateful Dead doing Dylan songs. (OK, I know certain TCers eyes are rolling now.) But it's awesome, IMHO. Jerry doing "She Belongs To Me." Bob doing "When I Paint my Masterpiece." Woohoo!

I picked up Dylan's recent autobiographical book, CHRONICLES vol. I. I have to admit I feared it might be as "fulfilling" as a pot of extra-bitter coffee after a week-long fast, which is how I feel about some of his music, if truth be told. To my great and pleasant surprise, it was one of the best books I've read all year, and I highly recommend it! I finished it in about two days, and my only complaint would be that it was too short.
