Yes, today marks 28 years since Elvis Presley disappeared somewhere in his own bathroom! Raise a Mai Tai to The King and watch his ALOHA FROM HAWAII TV special (the 2 disc DVD has several versions, I recommend the newly edited alternate concert, with his voice amped way up), or of course his "Elviki" classics BLUE HAWAII, PARADISE HAWAIIAN STYLE, or even GIRLS! GIRLS! GIRLS! (filmed largely on the Islands, though not as obviously so). All of these are on DVD.

There are also tiki scenes in GIRL HAPPY (not on DVD, but on VHS) and CLAMBAKE (on DVD).

Or, if you're a SF Bay Area local, swing by The Parkway Speakeasy in Oakland tonight at 9:15 for a FREE screening of my own 35mm print of his 1962 comedy FOLLOW THAT DREAM, co-starring my stepmom, Anne Helm. No tiki, but it was filmed in Florida, so there are lotsa palm trees. (Though the print, otherwise decent, is faded so they look radiated, all pink and atomic, which is kinda cool.) Peanut butter 'n' naner samiches on the menu, too, along with special raffle prizes. Directions etc here:

sounds like a good time--I have not yet faded, but I'll see a faded movie for free! :)

Anyone else going? Meet at Baggy's By the Lake before?

And, after the fact, let us not forget that yesterday was also Bukowski's birthday.

I remember the day well back 1977. I was barely 11 years old and, my Mom had come home from the mall and said that they announced that Elvis had died. The fuzzy part of this story, is that I think my mom said that they made the announcement over the P.A.. Could that be? You're browsing around the mall and suddenly a bulletin about Elvis dying is announced over the speakers? I wouldn't be surprised. I also remember Rona Barrett's (what happened to her) emotional report the next day on Good Morning America. Wow...it was a whole lifetime ago, wasn't it?
