Pages: 1 3 replies

Friday August 26th, 2005 10PM No Cover

Tiki Taix returns for edition sixteen with a transnational show featuring ukulele music from the east and west coasts as well as rare film of the Beach Boys performing with a TIKI!!

The Hoppin’ Haole Brothers will perform their unique and catchy, hapa haole ukulele novelty tunes as heard on their popular CD “How-lee” featuring the hit songs “Monkey’s Brain” and “Just Be Nice”. Touring all the way from New Jersey, this will be a rare opportunity to see The Hoppin’ Haole Brothers live and in person.

AND

We welcome back to Tiki Taix our Exotica archivist, author, publisher, filmmaker Domenic Priore. Never one to let us down, Dominic will be screening his short film “Tiki Exteriors” (1986) which includes shots of the now long gone KELBO’S! As well as numerous apartment complexes. Also see The Beach Boys in 1962 appearing in a rare film with a Tiki. We’ll also take a look at his new magazine Dumb Angel #4, the first edition in 16 years which features articles on Martin Denny, Les Baxter and even one by Shag, with loads of great Tiki images.

ALSO

King Kukulele and The Friki Tikis will mix it up and goof around a little as well as play some tunes from our self titled CD. Including “Shakalolo” and “When I’m Alone”. We’ll also be playing the old standards that you know so well. And we’ll play “Tiny Bubbles” and pray for Don Ho. The word is he may not be able to play his California tour, so we’ll raise a glass of Tiny Bubbles to his health.

PLUS

The Barcelona Tiki Bar Challenge-- Try to choose which Tiki Bar reigns supreme in Barcelona by taking a video tour of all three bars. This month we’ll feature the exotic Aloha Bar. Now you can take a peek at the exterior, see the live birdcage entry way, walk through the bar and see the Tikis in their Barcelonian glory. In the following months we’ll look at the Kahiki and the Kahala.

AND

Trader Vic Chapter 4-- Vic himself once told the wildly dramatic tale of his heroic search for a real buffalo to cook for a visiting dignitary from a far away land. We don’t know if Trader Vic was aware of the fact, but his story has been recorded in its entirety. At Tiki Taix we will present Chapter 4 of this epic saga and give the audience a little insight into the storytelling talents of the one and only Trader Vic.

Join us for this one night only event. We'll be at Tiki Taix 1911 Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park, Los Angeles 90026 One block north of the lagoon.
