Papua New Guinea String Bands w/ Bob Brozman

Songs of the Volcano
From Rolling Stone: "Watch out, Paul Simon: Steel guitar whiz and ethnomusicologist Bob Brozman traveled to superremote Papua New Guinea, one of the last places on Earth to get guitars, according to the liner notes, to jam with the guitar, ukulele and vocal harmony groups called string bands. The album captures a winning musical style that is immediately familiar but hard to pin down, at once reminiscent of Hawaiian folk music, Delta blues and bluegrass."
They give it 2/5 stars. Anyone familiar with this?

i pre-ordered my copy a few weeks ago. supposedly, it shipped last week. the cd is accompanied by a dvd made by phil donnison of australia's national junk band. phil is quite the ukulele player, btw. he sent me an email about this project last year, and i've been waiting for it to come out ever since.

i just posted my review of this project on my ezine site http://groups.yahoo.com/group/nakeduke

the short version -- for under $20 (incl shipping) you get a full length CD of music that is totally fresh and exciting. you also get a DVD of the fascinating story of the strings bands who create this music in the shadow of a live volcano that's part of East New Britain, Papaua New Guinea.

the musos all get an equal share of the sales money.

click http://www.bobbrozman.com to buy a copy. i can't imagine anyone regretting owning this brilliant package.
