Well, not tiki, but of the Oceanic art sorts. This is an Inuit Greenland storm paddle. Design taken from Inuit and Aleuts, used when weather gets rough, and the smaller size catches less wind. Made from anything that would wash up on their shores; Cedar, Fir, Pine etc. This time I tried Fir, which is strong but heavy, carves great with a plane, but like CRAP when you try to do detail with small tools. The grain is REALLY hard on the dark grains, and like soup on the light grain. Not a good combination. I opted to use a colored pencil for the design and did 4 coats of poly on top. This paddle is for me to USE!! Now, if I only had time to paddle to Hawaii. |
