Pages: 1 7 replies

Friday December 30th, 2005 10PM No Cover

Ring in the New Year (or close to it) with a little Tiki history, the legacy of Hapa Haole lives on, and the tale of the little lost moai.

Come to TikiTaix and meet Rick Cuhna, grandson of “The father of Hapa Haole music” songwriter Sonny Cuhna, author of the classic song Hapa Haole Hula Girl. Rick will perform music from Hawaii’s past and even entertain us with a little variety of his own. Rick is a multi intrumentalist playing many forms of stringed instruments including lap steal guitar and ukulele. Rick moved to Hawaii in Feb. ‘63 and started singing and playing at a small "folk" club in Honolulu called Hum-bums. He sang (as "The Hawaiian Hootenanny Boy") on the Lucky Luck television show in 1964, and worked Honolulu nightclubs with partner Dave Dawson through '66. He currently owns and operates Rainbow Garage recording studio in Los Angeles. oin us and we’ll learn a little about the legacy of Sonny Cuhna that still lives today in the musical voice of his grandson, Rick Cuhna.

AND

Sven Kirsten, author of “The Book Of Tiki” (recently mentioned in Los Angeles’ City Beat Magazine as “essential reading”) will join TikiTaix with an on location report from Glendale California. The mysterious Moai of Easter Island have rarely made it off the island and into other parts of the world. Sven will show us one of the few exceptions and tell the tale of how this real Eater Island Moai ended up quietly and unnoticed in a graveyard in Southern California.

ALSO

King Kukulele and The Friki Tikis play their song “Shakalolo” live and give the history behind the character Kanaka Ed from Waikiki. Who was this man and how did he find himself in this crazy predicament! The band will also play other songs from the Friki Tiki CD as well as comic classics and romantic ballads to boot. (Does this look familiar? Actually we didn’t get around the Tale of Kanaka Ed last at last month’s Tiki Taix but the second times always a charm.)

PLUS

The Barcelona Tiki Bar Challenge Part 3 -- Try to choose which Tiki Bar reigns supreme in Barcelona by taking a video tour of all three bars. This month we will review some of the video of the Kahala, the Aloha Bar, and the Kahiki for those that missed these sneak peaks in the last few months. THEN WE VOTE!

AND

Trader Vic Chapter 7 “The Final Chapter”-- Vic himself once told the wildly dramatic tale of his heroic search for a real buffalo to cook for a visiting dignitary from a far away land. We don’t know if Trader Vic was aware of the fact, but his story has been recorded in its entirety. At Tiki Taix we will present Chapter 7, the finale of this epic saga and give the audience a little insight into the storytelling talents of the one and only Trader Vic.

Join us for this one night only event. We'll be at Tiki Taix 1911 Sunset Blvd. in Echo Park, Los Angeles 90026 One block north of the lagoon.
