Those of you who are into the South Pacific musical may want to catch 'South Pacific in Concert From Carnegie Hall' on PBS tonight - it is a 2 hour version of a truncated South Pacific musical, starrring Reba McEntire, Alec Baldwin, and Brian Stokes Michael

Here is a review of the program from the Washington Post

so mix a pitcher of mai-tais, and take a sip whenever someone mentions Bali Hai.

Vern

hmmmmmm......Reba McEntire. that I CANNOT see in South Pacific.

Now can't you just hear Reba singing Bali Hai? Ack!!

please god, no...the chemistry between her & Alec Baldwin must be SHEER MAGIC

i'm not a fan of her singing, but she kicked ass in 'tremors.' i wouldn't give her the thumbs down just yet 8)

From the review:

"Bali Ha'i," one of the least clever of the songs, is unfortunately the one that gets the most reprises...
Blasphemy!!!

that TV show of hers is pretty gawd-awful---whos playing Bloody Mary-Rosanne?

wow--she has some SERIOUS credits--and the chops to be pretty good

still think this thing will have to be SUPER POLYNESIANED OUT to be good...

Thanks for the "heads up" Vern. Much appreciated!!!

Cheers and Mahalo,

I thought the show was pretty good. It wasn't quite the same as seeing a full theatre production, with multiple sets, costumes and lots of dancing and choreography, but I thought the music was pretty good. The music was with a full orchestra, so it is a bit more lush than many of us may be comfortable with. I had recently bought new stereo speakers, and this was easily the best South Pacific music I had heard -- I kept turning the volume higher and higher.

Reba McEntire was actually quite good. The character Nelly in South Pacific is a nurse from Little Rock, Arkansas, so Reba's southern drawl really was perfect for the dialogue, and I thought she did a great job overall, and after watching her on stage, I wouldn't mind at all being stuck on some South Pacific island with her.

The show is available on DVD and CD - here is a review of the CD from a local DC website dedicated to live theatre.
