The latest issue of Atlantic Monthly (Jan-Feb 07) has a pair of excellent articles, talking about the decay from the 1950's/60's of a couple of cultural icons. I couldn't read these articles, without rleating them to the glamour of the tiki restaurants of the same era. The first article is titled 'Are We Not Men?' (any article that gets its name from a Devo LP has got to be good), mostly about Playboy magazine, and how much better it was at fostering relationships with women than the current generation of men's magazines (i.e. Maxim, FME) I had never thought of Hugh Hefner as 'the human bellbottom, a walking bit of retro kitsch' until it was mentioned here. http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/prem/200701/girly-mags The second article is one the demise of the glamour of the air industry. It does a great job of showing how exotic air travel really was at the time. The seats back then were cramped, there was a limited choice of food, but people did not complain, because people were so impressed that they could easily fly from Point A to B. http://www.theatlantic.com/doc/200701/postrel-airlines Enjoy!!
