Tiki & Googie Eye Candy - Photos

Pages: 1 3 replies

I was hunting around on the Los Angeles Public Library web site tonight and found some various photos of interest in the Photo Collection Database. Enjoy.

Trader Vics at the Beverly Hilton, 1987

Don the Beachcomber, database lists photo on outside wall of the restaurant, no date

Mikado Motel in Valley Village, 1960

Denny's to be built along Ventura Blvd, designed by Armet & Davis

Lawry's Food Corporate Office, 568 San Fernando Rd., 1960

The Theme Building, LAX

This is a rarer shot during construction, haven't seen this one before.

This was the best find of the evening. Snap's Coffee Shop, Western @ 106th St., Los Angeles, circa 1960.

Note the palms growing thru the cantilevered roof

sweet finds!

I am still gonna use that Don The Beachcomber shot one day, it is such a great symbol of the downfall of Polynesian Pop in the late 60s:
The gaudy oversized advertisement...peddling a cheesy dinner BUFFET for 4.95...what a devolution for a once hot insider night spot.

Love the Snap's pix, must be an Armet & Davis too. And I remember Lawry's, what a place! It was a modernist and Mexican Disneyland in a seedy industrial area when I found it in the late 80s...long gone now. Thanks Mike :)
