What style of Tiki is this?

Does anyone know what type/style of Tiki this vintage carved bone necklace might be? I bought it at an antique store, but they didn't have any information as to it's origin. Thanks!

It is a very beautiful piece. But a Tiki it is not, I am afraid. I looks pre-Columbian to me, from South America. The horizontal slit eyes and mouth are an earmark of that style. I do not have the exact predecessor to this piece, but here is a comparison from that region:

But this questioning brought me to an interesting observation, one that might potentially get me into a lot of trouble here. Is some of the discord about what is Tiki and what is not perhaps gender-related? Looking back, It does seem to me that the die-hard obsessive Tiki archaeologists are in the majority male. There is a certain male "being a specialist" mentality that women just do not subscribe to as often as men.
One of the best scenes I remember that portrays that was in the early Mickey Rourke movie "Diner", where the boys discuss Jazz music and bands. They know every album, every year of issue, every band member and when he left. The girls are oblivious to this anally precise knowledge, they know what bands they like and what songs they like to dance to, and that suffices for them.

While men enjoy taking over a subject through logic and piling up of knowledge, women grasp it more intuitively. Both ways have their own value. But it seems to me that a certain hardcore Tiki mentality is more possessed by the males, and that its demonstration sometimes creates annoyance in the females who have a more happy-go-lucky I-like-what-Iike attitude towards the genre. It is as if too much Tiki scholarship cramps their style, or threatens to spoil the fun.

The thing is, for many men this kind of obsessive brain game is the greatest fun to be had. :)

Very interesting analogy. I probably fall into the catagory of "the females who have a more happy-go-lucky I-like-what-Iike"... I simply like all things unique, weird, exotic, animalistic, primitive, and/or of a vintage Polynesian & Islands style. And since I now live in the Tacky Capital of the world (aka Florida!) it's only fitting to adorn my body & home & garden with TACKY stuff ;->

I'm so glad that you elaborated on this last night before I read this post. It certainly would have prompted a more fierce reaction.

For starters, the most memorable moment in Diner for me was the football test. I have steered clear of men who are obsessed with sports ever since.

I think that there are a great many exceptions to your rule of men being logical hard core true tikiphiles and women being intuitive and oblivious. I also feel that the "Hey, Man. This is just supposed to be fun" attitude that has become so pervasive over the past two years or so on Tiki Central has driven many of these people away. If the folks who passionately pursue their interest in urban archeology are ignored or chided whenever they post, they will simply leave and stop sharing their incredible finds. (Oh, and there plenty of men around here these days with that I-like-what-I-like attitude too.)

I loved the Savage Renewal project that was launched back in 2006. It was meant to re-stimulate everyone's interest in what Tiki Central is truly about, but it quickly fell to the wayside.

I like to think that I am more of a blend of the two. I enjoy research and minutia, but I also tend to listen to my intuition.

There is an urban archeology project that I have been meaning to undertake for years, but it will probably lead to a journey into the ghetto, which my instincts tell me is just plain stupid. Maybe one of these days I'll get some balls and just do it.
