I finally found a great liquor store in Washington D.C., ABC on New Mexico. They carry just about everything you could want. Anyway, while picking up a bottle of St. James Hors D'age, I was told by their buyer that they are almost out of all St. James, the U.S. distributor is completely out, and rumor has it there is a problem with the distillery. Result: Rhum St. James may be a thing of the past. Better stock up tikiphiles it could be a long dry spell! Lee (I-Tiki) |

The horror! Please someone tell me St. James isn't finished. Looks like its time to do some hoarding. ---Welcome to TC I-Tiki! [ Edited by: johnman 2008-02-11 17:24 ] |

That sucks. My supplier is out. They ran out of Royal Amber and I was getting the Extra Old and now they only have Hor's D'age. I have another source in town. I'll check them and buy all in stock. That's my favorite sipping rum! |

This message from the Minister of Rum Ed Hamilton http://www.ministryofrum.com I can confirm that the St. James US distribution agreement expired and that St. James rhums will suffer a distribution interruption in the US. I can also confirm that the St. James distillery is alive and well. All of the St. James rhum shipped to the US is bottled in and shipped from France and not Martinique, though I've been told otherwise, by marketers. The bottles filled in Martinique are of 700 and 1000ml and not 750ml which is the required volume for the US market. It takes several hours to change the bottle size on a bottling line and the US volume was too small to warrant the extra cost and expense of shipping to the US from Martinique. Contract bottlers in France were consolidating St. James rhums distilled and aged in Martinique for the US market, reducing bottling and shipping costs to the small US market. |

No big deal. Just switch to another Martinique rum until St. James is available again. Rhum Clément VSOP would be a very goood choice. Great stuff, in fact I might not even go back to the St. James. |

Royal Ambre here was under $20 a bottle. One of those rums that proves good does not have to mean expensive. It won't be that easy to replace. |

The Rhum Clément VSOP is a good substitute for the more expensive St. James Hors D' Age. If you want a substitute for the St. James Rhum Ambre there is some lesser expensive stuff from Rhum Clément which may work but I haven't tried them. |
