Washington Post on Tiki Place in Dewey Beach

Pages: 1 9 replies

The Washington Post Weekend section today has a cover feature on vacationing at nearby East Coast beaches. The cover photo is a a group of attractive young women sharing a volcano bowl at Nalu Hawaiian Surf Bar & Grille in Dewey Beach, Del. You can see a version of the cover photo here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-srv/artsandliving/travel/features/2008/beachguide/index.html. In the print edition the area depicted in the photo is a bit larger, and you can more clearly see the Tiki heads on their volcano bowl and the Tiki carving in the background.

The description of the Nalu bar, along with another photo, is here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/15/AR2008051501454_2.html?sid=ST2008051502334. Scroll down to Dewey Beach.

There is also a review of the restaurant attached to the bar here: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/05/15/AR2008051501454_2.html?sid=ST2008051502334. Scroll down to "Ponos."

I did a search for the Bar's name on Tiki Central and didn't find anything, so I assume this place is new.

When I hit he Delmarva beaches this summer, you get bet I'll be checking out both the Nalu Surf Bar and the nearby Ponos.

Me too.

I would not get your hopes up since this place is in Dewey! Think Tiki Bob's at the beach. I will get my husband to go and check it out and report back, as he's in Dewey for "work" every week...!

Well, as I see it at the moment, the two places are promoting Hawaiian atmosphere. That does not necessarily mean Tiki. In fact, odds are against it unless it turns out that their patrons really all want Tiki and tell them so. Then, even if they themselves find it contrary to their own desires, for the sake of growing their business, they might be amenable to tikifying them. Well...they probably won't mess with the Ponos, but they might do the Nalu Surf Bar. I wonder if the'll have SPAM on the Ponos menu? I hope they'll have two-finger poi. 8)

Just a quick update, we were down in Rehoboth this past weekend and went to check out a friend doing an acoustic set at Nalu. Only thing I saw that would be of interest were the Drei Moai Scorpian Bowl and Drei Moai Volcano Bowl from Tikifarm. Other than that it was more of a "surfer, beach" type vibe with more Jimmy Buffett references than we care for. Just don't want anyone to be disappointed- if you are in the area you can check it out, but I would not want anyone to go out of their way to visit it looking for tiki!

That makes me feel better. I was in OC this past weekend, but couldn't get the gang interested in going up to Dewey to check out the Nalu, nor the Ponos next door. They'd just returned from Maui two weeks ago and weren't up for any more Hawai'ian cuisine. I was bummed about being so close, yet so far. I'll check it out eventually, but at least now I'll savor the idea that I might have averted disappointment.

Recent Nalu VISIT

We visited the Nalu about three weeks ago
All the parking outside is metered (Hmmm!)
ate lunch had some drinks a Backscratcher
& a Volcano sort of ok around $8.00 per drink.

Resin like Tiki poles inside with bamboo & thatch.
Plasma TV's had surfing images running. Music was
Buffet & Reggae (Hmmmm!!!) Overall it was ok,BUT
probably would not make great effort for repeat
return.

PS Asked waiter about a Zombie
the 20 something kid said "what's that?" (Ughhhhh!)
