What not to miss in Oahu

Hey all,

Heading over to Oahu next month and thought I would ask my Tiki Central amigos what essential "to do's" you recommend. Anything cool you would recommend to do or see? Anything we should really not miss? Any cool local spots we should check out?

Please help me out here.

Thanks so much in advance.

Aloha! Have a looks at this thread of Hawaiian Vacation tips.

It's got some good stuff in there. Of course, it would be great to have you post your thoughts in that thread upon your return. Have a fantastic time.

This question has been answered a lot of times before if you do a search. But, here are a few "must visits":

  • House Without a Key at the Halekulani hotel at sunset. If the Hiram Olsen Trio is still playing there, they're the ones to see.
  • Hawaiian Hut at the Ala Moana Hotel. GREAT Polynesian show (rivals the Mai-Kai). Terrible food and drinks.
  • La Mariana Sailing Club. Whatever you do, DO NOT miss this place if you are at all into vintage tiki. The Hawaiian Hut and La Mariana are pretty much the ONLY restaurant/bars you'll find mid-century tiki on the island.
  • The Hawaiiana Hotel. Stay here and you'll be staying in Hawaii the old school way.
  • Polynesian Cultural Center

The Polynesian Cultural Center is a fun day, with a minimal amount of background.
Excellent evening hula show.
Good luau, without cocktails - Mormon influence.

Here is the list of things to do in Waikiki:

  • I highly recommend going to the Polynesian Cultural Center and do the whole day tour with the luau. The show was excellent and the food rocks. Yeah no cocktails but you can always go out afterwards :)

  • Hike Diamonhead

  • Haunauma Bay (snorkeling)

  • Arizona Memorial

  • Tiki's Resturant http://www.restauranteur.com/tikis/

ALOHA

The Hawaiiana - Best 50's style hotel
House without a key - Best MaiTai's & great view
La Mariana - TIKI

I suggest that you meet up with "filslash" he will show you the way. Besides filslash is totally cool and a great guy to meet up with on your travels. PM him!!!

Aloha -

I say the same thing every time someone starts a "what to do on Oahu" thread :)
Head on over to Kailua Beach. Have lunch at the Kalapawai Cafe (you will see it on the left right after the small bridge when you enter Kailua town). Rent a kayak and catch some waves off the left side of flat island (the flat island a few hundred yards off kailua beach) - count the sea turtles and enjoy the breeze. Weekdays are best - kailua beach is BIG - you can spend a long time walking up and down it (and oogling the million $$ houses).

Hope you have a great trip!
