Has a bus been booked yet?
Also, when arriving at the Taboo Cove, do you know if they will be putting up a cover charge at all since it will be a very busy weekend? Will they be expecting a busload of people or are we just crashing the place? Leaving at 6pm for the tour, and ending with drinks; sounds like we need to pile up on the food before we leave!

CuriousCaddyDaddy

No, i haven't booked a bus yet, just shopped around and have found a good company that seems flexible if we need to change bus sizes. Busses are a bit pricey in vegas...

I just talked to 'tobota????' at Venus and he says if we get there before 10:pm we can all get in for free. Also, if folks don't make the bus tour - we can rendesvous there later (as previously suggested on another post). i will re-confirm on the free cover as the night gets closer.

Yup, I suggest people eat heavily before, or even better still get some pizza or other picnic box lunch take out and eat on the bus - cause there are 'dead' zones between cool stuff to look at...

P.S. I will probably make up a small momento touring book for the night and the first 20 people signed up get a little vintage vegas thank you gift from my cousin Cherry

HH

they dont start cover till 10pm

thanks for confirming that Hula hula!!! you never know when you talk to someone on the phone if they are giving you the straight up or not... so as long as tiki central invades well b4 10pm we'll have a monopoly on the bar!!!

I just booked the two nights, cause they made me. Anyway Wes And I want to go on the tour, see you there.!!!!!!!!

Cool Bax - see you there...
I am doing research as you read this!
There will probably be 2-3 stops along the way...

  1. quick sunset photo op at the Moai
  2. walking tour of Neonopolis/Neon Sign Museum/Fremont Street and 3) Drinks at The Peppermill
I'd like to make a few more stops - but not sure we can get everyone on and off the bus fast enough? we don't want to get to Taboo Cove late and have to pay a cover charge...

By the way - who is gonna jump over the bar and thrust in a Arthur Lyman CD on the player? Or maybe if we all just start chanting "Martin Denny" over and over again till it drives the bartenders crazy?

I hope they stick to that, since Vegas tends to raise prices on just about everything when it's a high occupancy weekend. For example, the bar over at New York New York that has the dualing pianos didn't use to charge any cover, then a holiday weekend came, and BAM, up went a cover charge! Again, I hope they stick to that "no cover until 10" policy.

Listen up Idontgotstenbuckspatty.
Yo, Frankie I got cho 10 hangin
On the wall that is.
No really, Frank, if the 10 is to much for ya, I got your back man, I am going to start a donation site for you. Bring all your cans over to my house and we can turn them into HARD COLD cash, I got news papers also?
I'd do anything for ya Cadwaller. We love ya man!!??

Thanks Bax,
I can do the cover charge. After all, I am SugarCaddyDaddy, the Hoiti Toiti, Beach cruisin', Cadillac ridin', multi-ring wearin', tiki collectin', multi-postin' TC'er!.

Keep your 10...just throw another party, will ya?

A

Count 2 more for the vegas bus (me & Naomi)!

Dawn Tiki, I saw your post and then it was gone?
Well anyway - in answer to the question that used to be there - This is not a typical Tiki Central Bus Crawl, it's more like an educational field trip about cocktail culture, etc. So if your kids are into looking at buildings and signs and learning about history - they'd be welcome. But as a parent you should know that drinking and general carousing also will be encouraged...

my friend, eric (of museum of neon art fame) and i are headed up to vegas this weekend to scope out the route, etc... any vegas tiki centralites wanna go for last minute drinks at taboo cove. we plan on being there around 9 to 9:30ish?

HH

me me me , what day?

last night...
sorry we missed you hula hula...
we also got in much later than expected, but the decor was wonderful as always... the sounds... well...

S

Mike and I are in :) We just signed up over on the Lotta Living site. So that's two more!

I talked to someone at Venus this last week about getting in on Friday Night and they said something about the best way to guaruntee getting a large group in with no cover is to "pre-buy bottles"
it wasn't completely clear what he meant - but he seemed to imply that if you buy a certain amount of drinks in advance, that you get a certain amount of VIP (no cover - no waiting) entries... I don't have time to look further into this with the tour and all - anyone else want to look into coordinating this?
I know we can probably drink our way through the door here...

My whole plan is to just get there early. Most people start going out to the clubs in Vegas around 10:00pm. I'm usually well into the night by that time. As long as everyone gets in, the music is better than what they usually play, and the fire blowing bartenders tone it down a bit, everything will be fine with me.

I see roughly 20 people have committed, so I am going to rent a 25 seater bus. If anyone else wants to join the tour - speak up soon!

T

If anyone wants to go to any bars that aren't Taboo Cove here's my recommendations. You may find me at any of these watering holes throughout the weekend (on Thursday night for sure and other nights only if I can tear myself away from the bands at the Gold Coast), but you won't find me at Taboo Cove.

(warning: current existance of these bars unknown)

Sky Lounge at the polo towers (swanky old-style lounge with great views):

Pogo's Tavern, especially on Friday nights for seeing big band jazz veterans:

The Dispensary Lounge, complete with water wheel:

The Peppermill Lounge for 70s porn fantasies:

http://www.vegas.com/nightlife/bars/peppermill.html

Algiers Cocktail Lounge, 2845 Las Vegas Blvd. S., 735-3311 The googiest bar in town.

Atomic Liquor Store, 917 Fremont St., 384-7371. Dive in seedy neighborhood with great neon sign and pretty good CD jukebox.

The Double Down Saloon, near the Hard Rock:

Champagne's Cafe, classic lounge w/ 45 jukebox and red flocked wallpaper:

jab or anyone else...

Have you been to any of these joints?

Cariba Charlies, 4835 S. Rainbow Blvd., 579-0217. Supposed to be tropical theme with huts and fish decorations.
Office 7 Lounge, 2660 S. Maryland Pkwy., 737-1966. Supposed to be a bar and grill with an island motif.
Ukulele Lounge, 620 Las Vegas Blvd. N., 382-7364. don't know anything but the name - and drove by the building when it was closed - just a big square concrete box north of downtown.

The Algiers and Atomic Liquor are both on our tour route and were still around as of last week :)
The Dispensary Lounge is actually on the route, too - thanks for the hot tip on that place.
We actually stop for drinks at the Peppermill halfway through the tour - so perhaps we will see you there? The bar manager was unbelievebly nice and said he would get an extra guy on staff to handle a large group of tourists coming through around 7:30 ish.
If Taboo Cove gives us any lip - we should head back to the Peppermill - which is not long for this world. (It is on the same property owned by the La Concha people and if they ever get their financing together, they will be demolished for a new large casino property.)
I also heartily recommend the HorseAround Bar at Circus Circus!

I probably won't make it to any of the bars Friday until late at night because there are too many good bands playing that night I don't want to miss (which is why I'm not taking in the tour - I have seen most of the places you mentioned and it sounds fantastic!). I doubt any of us will be in any condition to drive at 3am though so we probably won't see you folks until Saturday at Mondo Tiki.

Wasn't the horse around bar in the movie "Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas"?

Re: the bars you mentioned in previous post - I don't know anything about them. I'll print out the addresses and try to check 'em out if I can Thursday night or perhaps in the daytime.

I read that they recently put several restored old neon signs (some are animated) inside an entertainment complex downtown next to the neon displays along Fremont Street. We are going to check it out on Thursday night after our steak dinner at the Golden Steer. I highly recommend the Golden Steer for old-style Las Vegas steakhouse dining with impeccable service. It's on Sahara just west of the strip.

Speaking of steaks, has anyone been to A.J.s in the Hard Rock? The decor looks great for a new joint from what I saw on the web site - sputnik lamps, etc. Another steakhouse I like is the Ranch Steakhouse at the top of Binion's Horseshoe hotel downtown. Great views and good service. The food's a bit better at the Golden Steer though.

yup... and Hunter S. Thompson wrote about that place...

That would be the Neon Museum of Art and Neonopolis (again both on the tour)

Haven't eaten there yet, but it is an amazing space - as good if not better than the photos on the web.

Is it too late to sign up for the tour? Mr. and Mrs. Bongofury would love to join you!

!MONDO!

Mr and Mrs. Bongo Fury are on the bus!
Bus leaves the Hard Rock at 6PM!!!

EAT WELL FIRST or BRING FOOD AND DRINKS for the bus ride.

... Just a note... any last minute additions are totally welcome, but please make them firm confirmations, cause the bus is going on my credit card!

oh and.... !MONDO!

HH

So whats the offical schedual for the bus route? Im not gonna make it but would love to meet up at the peppermill or whereevers. I belive it would be polypop, flotina and myself. And what time are you all hitting the cove?

T

I am leaving by car from Chicago in about 5 minutes... three day road-trip with plenty of thriftin', road-side attractions, and sleepin' in the car awaits... and then I will see you all in Vegas, for the bus tour, on Friday!

Is it still a plan to hit Taboo Cove after the bus tour...?
