Randotti

When I was a kid in the 70's they had these plaster skulls at Disneyland that had Randotti on them.

Any one remember these? They had a grate 1970's Creepy Magazine ghoul look.

Well so this mourning I am looking at the chips in mine and wondering if I could fined more Randotti stuff.

I use to have one from the 70's too. I drew all over it. This one is from the 80's and not as cool. Holy crap 427$??!! What a stupid kid I was.

Jeff Smith was the last owner of Randotti. The Company was founded by his Father Randy and mother Dotti, hence the namesake. The company produced most of the plaster-styled collectibles for Disneyland as well as Knotts Berry Farm, Magic Mountain among many others. The company was located in Stanton, CA not far from Disneyland, at 7862 Main St.

Jeff has told me among others to be cautious purchasing ebay items, as alot that he has seen listed are newer reproductions and bootlegs using the namesake. However, a couple of authorized pieces are being reproduced from the original molds that were sold off in auctions after the plant closed (i believe) in the early 80s(?). Original Randotti skulls can fetch quite a penny nowadays, so for obvious reasons, the bootlegs have started making an appearance. You can find Jeff Smith a regular user on doombuggies.com messageboards answering as many questions about the history of his fathers business, and explain which Randottis are legit, and which are repros. His username on doombuggies is "Randotti".

Jeff has currently wrote a book on the legend of Outlaw Soapy Smith, of which is a distant relative of his. He maintains a website and blog regarding info on Soapy Smith. http://www.soapysmith.net He is a really nice guy and very informative. His childhood stories growing up in and around the Randotti factory are golden! What a childhood the guy seemed to have, I can only imagine. He has also been "pressured" by Randotti enthusiasts to write and release a book with most things related to Randotti products.

i have a randotti plaster tiki.it's about 8" tall.great detail.

I'm so glad you brought up Randotti. His family's skulls and other items including tiki were the best quality! I'm a frequent poster over at Doombuggies.com. It's an awesome site if your a fan of the Haunted Mansion and yes, there's a HUGE Randotti thread over there. Check it out!

Well, as the old saying goes...ya learn something new everyday if you keep your head out of your a**.... I had no idea about any of this and it ca be the thing I learned today. Thanks for the "edumacation"!

There was a gift stand in Adventure Land that we would hit on the way out of the park with rubber snakes and the skulls and junk. So cool.

I picked this up a while back at a junk shop:

It's marked Randotti 1976 and glows in the dark. It seemed familiar in design and construction and I eventually realized it reminded me of some Disneyland Haunted Mansion souvenirs bought on trip with my grandparents in 1978. I checked the name on the internet and found most of the same info as above.

The souvenirs we bought were headstones which they customized with your name. (I think these were sold in a magic shop.) My step-grandfather got a headstone for my grandmother that read "Here lies Maxine that old ghoul of mine." It was in their bedroom for years.

Oh, yeah, I love those Randotti skulls, used to have a small nice one a long time ago. It glowed in the dark like you just wouldn't believe! The Randottis are probably the coolest glow skulls ever made. I remember they sold them in Adventureland and also at a magic shop in Fantasyland. Disneyland was a slightly different kind of fun back then, the imagery had a threatening edge here and there and the Randotti skulls contributed to that.

Sorry it's so long, but they did produce 200 or so products. I have been doing extensive research on the company and it's products. Considering doing some reproductions for those folks interested in the style, but not the hefty price tag these items often come with, if you can find them at all.

That is very cool that you found this. Since I can remember going to the Haunted House, I dug all that ghoulish stuff. The old Haunted House was much better than the re"Vamped" one. Anyway, thanks for the link to Doombuggy. Just another thing to delv into during down time at work...um I mean when I get home.

I used to have a tiki pendant necklace I got at Disneyland, pretty sure it was a Randotti piece. I wish I could find a picture of it - it had rubys for eyes. Come to think of it, I think that was my first tiki!

when you create the reproductions are you crediting rondotti as the designer? it would be really cool to own an actual rondotti licensed piece in this day and age.

I take care to not only let folks know that these items come from original Randotti casts, and are Randotti designs, but also that they are not produced by Randotti any longer. I don't want someone buying one thinking they are getting a Randotti produced item. While the reproductions have that same look, they aren't collectable originals and thereby don't carry the large price tag. I also don't want anybody buying repros from me and passing them off as originals, so I date the bottoms of each piece.

I personally only have one original Randotti piece. I bought it from a lady that worked for the company and now sells new old stock. It was really expensive, but it was one of the designs that I owned as a child so I wanted to make sure I had at least that one. I would love to own many of them, but the prices can be prohibitive. Plus, not all the originals glowed, and that just seems like a waste. Why not, when they look so cool in the dark? As a result, just about all of my reproductions glow, or are at least available in a glow in the dark version. Oh well, maybe someday I can acquire more originals.....until then my tiki bar glows from the light of reproduction skulls and tikis. Still pretty cool though.

Thanks for posting those catalog pages. A while ago I bought a plaster cast of the 12 inch 'Hedleba' Tiki, with its name incised on the bottom (no Randotti tag though), and the signature sounded strangely familiar. I asked Bamboo Ben about it, and indeed, his aunt Ba Hedley was friends with Randotti's daughter, so it seems likely she designed that Tiki. Eli Hedley had his own store in Adventureland. Dotieba is another curious name... :)

I believe the Tiki pendant business of the 60s and 70s was 'copy and get copied', Randotti included.

Just off the top of my head I can tell that #9,10 and 13 are Randotti copies. They could be recasts or refinished originals I suppose, but they seem to lack the detail usually present on the originals.

Then I wondered what other important information was purged out of my mind to make room for my Randotti number recognization capabilities. I have an iPhone now, so maybe that will slowly replace some of the more useless cognitive functions I currently have.

I found it in a random pile of junk at the swap meet. One of those sellers who just throws out a bunch of unsorted boxes of cheap stuff. I paid $3 for it.

Nice finds! The only thing I ever find at swap meets are old vhs copies of the A-Team and "Short Circuit". Mr T is cool and all, and #5 IS alive, but I'd much rather find some tiki stuff much less Randottis..I think maybe I need to find better swap meets..
