I see a lot of live theatre in the DC area, and in the last year, I was very fortunate to see two different shows by an impressive and very dynamic actor/story-teller named Mike Daisey, who performs unscripted one-man monologues, seated alone at a table, much like former story-teller Spaulding Gray. Mike Daisey just spent several weeks on the remote South Pacific Island of Tanna in Vanuatu, so he could live, interact, and gain first-hand experience of members of the John Frum cargo cult there. His visit last month coincided with the annual John Frum Day Celebration. This is all in preparation for a new show that will have its official World Premiere in D.C. next January, titled 'The Last Cargo Cult' Until then, Mike Daisey will perform portions of his monologue to selected audiences, trying various segments and ideas, to see how they interact - kind of like theatre's version of an early pre-season NFL game. On Sunday afternoon, March 22, Daisey will be presenting some of his notes and early ideas of this new work in progress. This event will be held at the Center Theatre Group ( Kirk Douglass Theatre) in Culver City. Tickets are only $5.
Need more reason to attend? Go to Daisey's blog and read his 10 things he learned from his February visit to Tanna. I can guarantee that seeing the man speak in person is even more exciting than reading this list - and this list is pretty damn interesting. Here is a trailer clip of Mike Daisey in action......
