August 14
SOHO's Surfing Tiki Modern Trolley Safari
10am-2pm

Dudes and Dudettes! For the enjoyment of Tiki lovers in town for Tiki Oasis, SOHO is holding its 2nd Annual Trolley Safari. Led by local Tiki experts Alex "Uncle Poi Dog" Bevil and Jaye "Gidget Goddess" Furlonger in search of some of San Diego's unique Tiki Modern landmarks.

Fantastic and whimsical expressions of exotic architectural escapism, San Diego's surviving Tiki Modern style buildings are local manifestations of a nation-wide post-World War II interest in Polynesian Pop-influenced architecture, interior design, entertainment, music, food, and clothing. Whether it's called Tiki Modern, Tiki-Polynesian, Polynesian-Nautical, or Atomic Tiki, the style typified the marketing of San Diego as a tourist destination where visitors could recreate in a man-made semi-tropical paradise. This was particularly true in the years leading up to and immediately after Hawaii's statehood, which, coincidentally, will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary on August 21st.

After boarding the Tiki Trolley at the front lobby of the Crowne Plaza Hotel, you'll visit some of San Diego's iconic Tiki Modern landmarks like Trader Mort's Liquor Store, the Bali Hai Restaurant, and the Vacation Village Resort. You won't want to miss looking for vintage Tiki totems in the wilds of the Half Moon Inn's garden courtyard, and climb the Vacation Village Resort's lacy steel observation tower. During your trek, you will pass through some of San Diego's most beautiful bay and ocean scenery, before you arrive at Windansea Beach, La Jolla, to visit San Diego's only officially designated surf-related historic landmark.

Drinks and some snacks will be provided. Feel free to bring your own goodies too. NO BOOZE!

After the trolley returns to the Crowne Plaza Hotel, there will be an optional hike to the hotel's "hidden" Tiki Gardens, which will begin at 3pm.

Please wear comfortable walking shoes, bring a hat, sunscreen, and, of course, aloha shirts are mandatory! This tour is not accessible.
