Mondo Tiki 2003 Pics!

What a luau! Thanks to Holden and all the Tikiphiles that gave Vegas yet another great opportunity to hear great music/party/drink/pee.

I am honored to have shared the stage with Shag and Sven (the Tiki Ali'i) and am thinking of pursuing the conch full time.

Back to the “why these girls and not these.” comment. I think girls who have bi tendencies and are not hard bodies but are comfortable with their bodies and sexualities don’t really care what other people think. (That must have been the longest sentence with the most clauses I have even written. I’m tired just thinking about it.) I also think that the hard bodied gals are more self conscious and tuned in to ridicule, so they would be less likely to be exhibitionists then the other gals.

Just a thought: How much alcohol was involved? Because that can also be a huge factor, I find that I have actually been quite the exhibitionist myself with a few drinks added to the mix. Oh well!

On the subject of beautiful women come in many shapes; I thought the blond was cute, Very Gwen. Great Hair!

You know, I know I'm going to be thrown out of tiki central for saying this, or at the very least ridiculed by several (mostly male) members, but I was a little off-put by the whole bikini contest. When I read that it was going to be a part of Mondo, I was kind of disappointed. That really seemed like a spring-break-MTV-Cancun-parrothead-fratslob thing to do. I mean, aren't we past this kind of stuff? Sometimes, there's a performance/artisitc/camp element to these things, like the burlesque shows, but this is just drooling guys looking at skin. There are many fabulous things to celebrate about the 40s 50s and 60s, but I think "objectification of women" is probably one that we can leave behind. Of course, they were all volunteers, so what the fuck do I know? Sorry to all if I sound like a lame-o, it's just my 2 cents.

Mar, I like to objectify women as much as the next guy but I agree with you too. A burlesque show would have been so much more "in our vein." That's what I think 'those girls' were trying to give us. I think, perhaps, we all might have been over the bikini contest but the Hard Rock wasn't. I guess it might have been a way for the normal folk to be part of what we were doing there. But yeah, I think bikini contests are pretty trashy too. Al did a great job MCing though.

Thanks for the compliment JT. I'd better have some decent composition in my shots considering I was an art/photo major in college. Atomic Cocktail's ain't so bad either since he was a film student at NYU. I also believe in editing too though. A bunch of photos can seem a lot stronger if you take out all the bad stuff.

As for extracurricular activities, yes I do model (mostly vintage stuff) as well as dance, sing and I've even done a little burlesque.

So where's my 50 clams.....preferrably with some nice alfredo sauce on top. :)

The mixers were not the greatest, but it sure had me kissing the bath tub all night.
My wife and I came back on time to see APE performing, and by that time I was pretty Ape myself. Yes, we were the ones "attempting" to limbo, but instead I did a roll back manuver!

As for the girls, they were doing their thing and they all looked good, It's all about having a good time. As far as pissing goes... don't know. But I did chat with Bamboo Ben in the restroom who told me he bought his bamboo suit at the Men's warehouse... As if I wasn't dazed and confused already.

Over all even with the bad hang over I give it five tikis!!!

I think it was the cigar at Cuba libre what put me over the edge, I don't even smoke!

Well, I finally got all that hairspray washed out of my hair! and am back online...

I wanna give a great big shout-out and thank you to Holden for putting together Mondo Tiki and ESPECIALLY for all the Tiki Centralites for making the looong trek out to Las Vegas and withstanding the chilly vegas evening to support the vendors and show.

I think the memory of that weekend will be a favorite... especially after I hear all the 'backstories.'

What an incredible and unexpected treat to see SHAG join BigBroTiki Sven and Hukilau Brown doing bird calls on Quiet Village. It was just more than this girl can handle!

Mondo Tiki is probably a distant memory to all of you by now (if you remember it at all - too many Scorpions - ouch!) but I have finally just returned home!

Rolled into Chicago at 5AM this morning (May 01), with 6000 new miles on my Nissan and more than a couple-few new stories to tell from 16 solid days on the road.

Thanks again to Holden for throwing a first rate Tiki bash, and to all of the kind folks who gave me the priviledge of scribbling on ther TRT books. Your support means the world to me.

I didn't get to see too much of the event myself, as I was busy scrawling my Hancock all over shiny new books, so thanks to those who posted pics.

Even though I'm a little bit mature to be at a springbreak event, I'm sure glad I made the effort to fly in for the afternoon at Mondo Tiki 2003. My old Navy buddy Mike, who lives in Vegas, went with me and we had a great time just sitting back a sippin'MaiTai's and listening to the Thurston Howlies morph the theme song from Gilligan's Island and some song by the Doors, I think? Big Mahalo to all of you who worked so hard to make Mondo Tiki a success.

Glad to see you guys made it to the Peppermill. I missed it this year.

Casino was on Encore channel last Friday so I watched it again. Some locations they filmed in were the Peppermill, Aku Aku at the Stardust, the La Concha motel, and the Algiers motel. I also spotted the Atomic Liquors' neon sign. Last time I saw it was a while ago and I didn't know these places.

Jab- What tiki bar is shown briefly that DeNiro and Pesci walk out of? It's in a casino I think. Surely not still there?

It's the Aku Aku that was at the Stardust until sometime in the early to mid 90s I believe. In the movie they are sitting at a small table at the bar and when they get up to leave you can see the moai at the entrance to the restaurant.

Another cool scene had a freeform blue concrete pool with windows in it that you could see into the pool through. Is/was that pool at the Algiers motel?

Gaww-lly, I didn't know that - the Aku Aku on film! And didn't catch the Peppermill scenes that people referred to either. Sheesus, I should watch that again, only looking at the scenery more this time. Usually I think the "downfall of the hero" or "man's inhumanity" type movies are too depressing, but cool scenery is a color of a different horse.

Maybe that pool with windows is the "glass something" Motel south of the strip near the airport. Futura Girl probably knows.

The 1958 Aku Aku restaurant left this world sometime in the 1980s. Perhaps they shot outside the Tropicana Hotel where there were similar moais made of plaster that were there until 1996 (Casino was shot in 1995). I am ashamed to say I have never seen Casino so I cannot validtae this...

The pool is south strip at the Glass Pool Inn (formerly the Mirage until Steve Wynn bought the rights to the name)

Perhaps they recreated part of the Aku Aku for the movie as the movie portrays the reign of Frank "Lefty" Rosenthal (played by DeNiro), who ran the Stardust in the 60s and 70s (but they called it the Tangiers in the movie). When the bikini contest at Mondotiki was over I asked the Two blond hotties if I could take my picture with them. They were very accomodating while MY WIFE snapped pictures of the three of us!

This video has given me suuuuch pleasure for several months now since I received the edited copy from Mr. McSmee - the man who has actually shot a documentary on Shag - keep a lookout for that when it surfaces - i feel guilty for not getting my webby in line until now.
