Trader Vic’s Island Grill Sarasota Grand Opening Located at 351 Cattlemen Road north of Fruitville Road and west of I-75, the new venue will fill the renovated building vacated by R.J. Gator’s last year. Trader Vic’s, home of the original Mai-Tai, was established 75 years ago in Oakland, Calif., by Victor Bergeron, who loved the South Seas and spirit of the islands. His Polynesian-themed restaurants serve island-style cuisine and signature cocktails. With a more casual atmosphere than the other established Trader Vic’s, Sarasota is the first to include “Island Bar and Grill” in the name. You’ll find giant tikis, retro artifacts, Tahitian music and three bars, including one on the outside patio. Co-owner Bill Kodra said more than 100 employees were hired to open the new restaurant.
