was doing some surfing after my other post ( http://www.tikicentral.com/viewtopic.php?topic=36465&forum=1 ) and found one of the presenters ( http://markhillpublishing.co.uk/ ) had written a book on German and Italian ceramics of the 50s, 60s and 70s called Fat Lava. there is also a clip on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?gl=GB&hl=en-GB&v=DhDRCOT3DTY Some of the designs and glazes really echo the Tiki/Pele fire Goddess theme so I thought I'd pass on the link for all to enjoy. regards Andrew |

That's the next reference book I want to get. I'm a huge collector of Mid-Century everything! I've been collecting Fat Lava/West German ceramics for about a year now. It's hard to find here but well worth the search!

Thanks for posting this. I've seen similar pieces and it never occurred to me that the style was an actual design aesthetic. I always just considered it to fall under the generic "organic" look which was popular into the 70s. |

If you follow the You Tube link above and then look at the associated videos listed on the right - look for some by Ginfor1 - he has made a series of 2-5 minutes presentations on the whole West German ceramics subject that I found very interesting. best regards |

I did some experimenting with fat lava glaze. Can't see it so well in this pic but the lava running down the side of the volcano is very dimensional - it foams up a little, porous with lots of little air pockets in it. |
