Pages: 1 23 replies

Hi all!

A month or so back, I started Maine's first (and only) Exotica radio show "Primitiva Island" which airs every Tuesday from 6-8 AM at http://www.wrfr.org (or on the air at WRFR FM 93.3 in Rockland Maine). I've been a HUGE fan of Exotica music for years, and figured it was time to start playing for the masses...I archive the show usually at http://www.quispquake.info if you want to check it out. Martin Denny-Similau (Exotica)

I'll be at Ohana (my first Tiki event) and I'm really excited to hear this genre of music I love live...Hopefully I'll see some of you there!!!

Quipsquake - mucho fabuloso!!! I have been grooving to the exotic sounds (of part one). Now I have this strange urge for a mai-tai! I am donning the fez and conjuring the spirit of the drunken monkey.

"Eee, Eee, Eee!!!"

Don Tiki-Primitiva is awesome! I need a copy of this cut.

WAIT A SECOND!!!

At (or around) the 13 minute mark on part two, I distinctly heard a ferocious dog!

Yep, I played it back. THAT WAS A DOG, ALRIGHT!!!

Eee! Eee! Eee!!!

Great to see you at this. I make it to Rockport/Camden every year or so. What a scenic and serene place it is.

I don't suppose there's a local bar that features at least one tropical cocktail? That would be great.
Yeah I know, it's not the really the place for that kind of thing — which would make it just that much more awesome.
I know Gilbert's would never do it but maybe that new Smokestack Grille place?

Rock, er, groove on.

Yes, the dreaded "Shit-Poo" (my Shih-Tzu/Poodle mix dog) was screaming at absolutely nothing as he does rather often :)

Nope, Rockport is definitely not known for it's tropical drinks (at least from what I've been able to find...) Now if spiked lobster juice is your thing...Maybe...

OK, so I just found your post last night and as of 2:32 PM I have listened to everything you have online. GREAT STUFF! Congratulations. I look forward to the next show. (There is one glitch by the way, the link to Part 2 of the 6/1 show is actually Part 2 of the 6/15 show.)

Great to meet you and your wife at Ohana. Fun times.

Is this on iTunes as a podcast? And if not would you consider offering it as such?

Sorry to get a bit off topic here, but I'm headed for Camden/Rockport this coming weekend for a one-week seminar.

My plane lands in Portland late Saturday the 23d where a hotel bed awaits my weary caress and then I have all day Sunday to make my way over to Camden - which I've been to 4 or 5 times over the past decade - where I'm planning to have dinner with my soon-to-be classmates. I plan to stop at Red's Lobster Shack along the way just to say I've done it, though I hear there's better.

Questions for you Maine types (I know only of Suffering Bastard and QuispQuake)

  1. Any suggestions for what I could do for the first half of Sunday in Portland? I've never really explored it. It doesn't have to be tiki which is good since I understand none exists. A nice lunch looking out over the water would be sufficient excitement but anything that tantalizes the senses is of interest.

  2. Any interest in meeting up in Camden or thereabouts for a drink one night?

Really, any suggestions you might have would be appreciated. I'm pretty good about finding adventure and road companions on my own but it never hurts to ask the locals. I look forward to listening to Primitiva Island live.

Feel free to PM me if you think it's inappropriate to further hijack this thread.

Cheers,
-fm

Just listened to your latest show at work today and absolutely loved it! As a huge fan of both tiki and Downeast Maine, I'll definitely be tuning in for the next show tomorrow AM. I don't suppose there's anywhere in Camden where one can procure a proper Mai Tai? Might just ask next time I find myself at the bar at Cappy's Chowder House.

Keep up the good work!

I've got to find more shows like this, especially either as a podcast or that I can tune into on my iTunes radio.

Unfortunately, the Mai Tai (at least one not made from some awful mix) is not available ANY where up here...Glad you liked the shows...With a horrible winter up here, it's my little blast of tropical in Maine...

Hey Quisp,

Great job you're doing, I've downloaded and been listening for the last few weeks, hard to get enough time to get through them all so far...I was wondering if you had any thoughts on doing a special show on Hawaiian steel guitar music? I've been using your shows to quickly find what exotica I like and what I can do without when trying to find what to buy. Thanks for such a huge range of selections...Radio sucks, thankfully people like you are doing what you do.

Thanks for the kind words man!!! One of the great things about doing this show is realizing just how much exotica there really is out there, both old & new...I was worried about a two hour weekly show with a format like this, but so far, I've been able to keep it interesting!

As for the Hawaiian Steel Guitar thing...Possibly in the future...I'm not an expert on that type of music by any means, but the great thing about making special editions of Primitiva Island, I dig right in and learn FAST!
