"Nilla's Tiki Shindig" 3rd Friday may 20th, 2011

Pages: 1 1 replies

Yes it's true...as noted on the page of pubs, The Bikini Lounge in Phoenix, AZ is reemerging of sorts to it's historic roots. It will take some time, but we have slowly begun by embracing the local community of Tiki artists and enthusiasts to showcase their work.

On the fringe of Phoenix's Art district, it has long served its purpose for an artist's dry whistle and a wall to display...our resident pigment gurus have long supported the greatness lurking in the shadows of a well reputed dive. It's restoration is inevitable, and all things Tiki will indeed be embraced.

On to the event...
Tom Cooper's show is coming to a close the 19th of May (extended for a month just cause)...

The time just wasn't taken to best photograph the installation (sooo busy) but check the link for a preview;

The black-light gods were properly satisfied!

Certainly not at the top of our list to pull from the walls as it just looks so right! Thanks to Tom for everything. We believe some more of his work is in our near future for permanent installation!!!

But...the 20th a new day. The Valley's own surf rock band (we love the beach around here too ya know!) "The Surf-Side IV" harbors Tiki connoisseurs as well as the bands very own "Nilla" will be showing his newest work.

Expect an intimate set from the boys, and a Dj on both ends spinning the roots.

Partnering up with the "Hey Joe" food truck, http://heyjoetruck.com/ out back serving up the closest thing to island food in these parts, including some fresh coconuts that when you make room in the vessel you can pair with some rum specials that night!!

Stayed tuned for sure!!
Mahalo!

Zog went on a photo safari of the recent Nilla's Tiki Shindig at Bikini Lounge in Phoenix.

A large convoy of kustom bicycles made the trek and ends up lining the front of the bar.

A Nilla woodblock print from the show is on display.

The band The Surfside IV rocking in tight quarters!

Several Tom Cooper day-glo tiki art pieces look to be on permanent display now.

Matt (co-owner) samples the fresh, young coconut and rum and approves.

Interesting tiki decor welcomes visitors by the front door.

These revelers insist that their pic was going to be in the local paper, despite what we told them.

One of the kustom kruiser bikes awaits a perhaps wobbly ride home.

A shot of the magnificent, old painting above the bar.
