Dr. Zarkov’s Tiki Lounge Playlist: July 6, 2011

The theme of this week’s show was a celebration of that hearty Hawaiian pastime – surfing, including songs about it, some of the most epic surf guitar music as well as a few putataive and prototypical influences on that musical genre.

Dr. Zarkov’s Tiki Lounge can be heard every Wednesday from 5 to 6 p.m. Eastern Time on the Internet at: http://www.radiofairfax.org Unfortunately, this show is only broadcast live; there are no recorded shows archived that you can listen to.   10. “Sweet Baby of Mine” the 1956 Ruth Brown hit, from the anthology: Rockin’ in Rhythm – The Best of Ruth Brown, with a guitar break the presaged the surf guitar style.

  11. “Slippery When Wet” by The Bud Shank Quartet, the theme to the 1959 movie about surfing of the same name, with Bud Shank on Flute; Billy Bean on Electric Guitar; Gary Peacock on String Bass; and Chuck Flores on Drums. Recorded in 1959.
