"It Came From Hangar 18": the ultimate tiki sci-fi pulp novel

Pages: 1 22 replies

I have been "secretly" working on this project for months, with Scott Fulks, a regular at Forbidden Island. I can't reveal anything more right now than this fantastic cover by Michael Fleming http://tweedlebop.com/, it's an epic that all pretty much revolves around "Tiki" (though it has much, much, more), it'll be available in early 2012, and I'll be signing copies, along with Scott, at Tiki Oasis 12 next summer.

More details soon.

Just started a Facebook page, where I'll be hosting updates
http://www.facebook.com/itcamefromhangar18

Also here's the back cover description, which provides a few more "clues":

IT CAME FROM HANGAR 18 is the most action-packed, erotic science fiction epic since The Bible but with even more sex and violence! IT mixes hardcore sex with hard science, conspiracy theories with conspicuous satire, mythological monsters with mutated mobsters, flesh-eating feminists with voyeuristic vampires, and creates a potent literary Tiki cocktail pulsating with pulp, planets, pulchritude, politics, and a plethora of other “p” words. This is essential end-of-the-world desert-island flashlight-under-the-covers reading, the ultimate B movie in literary form, and the most tantalizing textbook in the annals of anarchic academia.

Back cover, also by Michael Fleming.
Publication pending...stay tuned.

That cover makes my face melt, it's that awesome. Is that Nosferatu on the back? Love it.

This book will make your MIND melt. And it probably has more "tiki" per literary capita than any other book ever written, except of course "The Book of Tiki," and certainly more than any other sci-fi book. It's over 500 pages, a true epic. Hope to see you at our Tiki Oasis autograph session in August, aloha.
ps yes, that's a direct Nosferatu reference, only the tip of the iceberg in terms of pop culture riffs.

btw, here's the complete cover:

BOOK RELEASE PARTY at Forbidden Island in Alameda http://www.forbiddenislandalameda.com/ (where the book is partially set) on Thursday, March 1, 7-11PM. Scott and I will be signing copies hot off the press, with live surf music by The TomorrowMen http://tmensurf.com/ Aloha.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE:

WHAT: "IT CAME FROM HANGAR 18" BOOK RELEASE PARTY WITH THE TOMORROWMEN LIVE, AT FORBIDDEN ISLAND TIKI LOUNGE!

Co-authors and fellow Alamedans SCOTT FULKS, a mad scientist posing as a successful computer software engineer, and WILL "THE THRILL" VIHARO, a struggling pulp fiction author posing as a successful pulp fiction author, will be signing copies of their joint sci-fi pulp epic IT CAME FROM HANGAR 18 hot off the press at one of the novel's actual settings, FORBIDDEN ISLAND TIKI LOUNGE in Alameda, CA, world famous for its award-winning cocktails and aloha ambience. They will no doubt sully its stellar reputation with this big, bawdy book, but it's all in good fun!

Will, who is employed by Forbidden Island (at least until owner Michael Thanos reads his latest work) as their publicist, live music booker, weekend doorman, and "Forbidden Thrills" cult movie nite host, met Scott and his wife Jenn, frequent patrons, at the bar a couple of years ago, and they struck up a friendship. Scott read all of Will's published novels and not only still talked to him, but commissioned him to write a pulp novel in his inimitable style based on Scott's sketchy outline, wherein Scott could embed some heavy, complex scientific theories he's been developing for decades. It was a match made in Pulp Fiction Heaven, or Hell, depending on how easily offended you are...

BUT WAIT, THERE'S MORE!
The event will feature live, futuristic surf music by THE TOMORROWMEN, also selling copies of their recent CD, "It's About Time"
http://tmensurf.com/shop.html

PLUS!
Cocktail specials and classic sci-fi flicks on Forbidden Island's big indoor screen and bar TV!

ABOUT THE AUTHORS:

SCOTT FULKS is a mad scientist bent on world domination, or maybe just bent. Hobbies include building flying saucers, re-creating retro subcultures, sewing, and goth dancing. His cover identity is that of a highly paid software engineering director, thus using his considerable management expertise to fund his nefarious activities.

WILL “THE THRILL” VIHARO is a freelance writer, pulp fiction author and B movie impresario. His novels include A Mermaid Drowns in the Midnight Lounge, Chumpy Walnut, Down a Dark Alley, Lavender Blonde, Freaks That Carry Your Luggage Up to the Room, and the “Vic Valentine, Private Eye” series. He loves jazz, cats and cumulus clouds. He hates fake boobs and CGI werewolves. http://www.thrillville.net/fiction/

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: It Came from Hangar 18 (Paperback)
Fulks' & Viharo's It Came from Hangar 18 is the literary equivalent of the Trader Vic's Zombie: best consumed on an empty stomach and sipped leisurely. It is a pop culture full frontal assault, knocking aside all your previous literary sensibilities like the cosmic tenpins in Valhalla. It reads like Popeye's manly devotional, with the occasional splash of cold-water science via Sherman and Mr. Peabody. It will make you both smarter and hornier than you ever thought humanly possible, while leading you by the curiosity straight through the minefield of existential Possibility. It is a heavy metal ballad of the human condition, with a chorus of The Ventures and a turnaround by Martin Denny. It is the script for the greatest drive-in movie of all time: the dream collaboration of Robert Rodriguez, Rod Serling and Russ Meyer. It will introduce you to things you've never heard of, and remind you of things you forgot before you were born. It will scare, inspire and titillate you; it will kick your intellectual ass and uplift your spirit, if you have one. It will simultaneously ennoble and humble you like the noir Philosopher's Stone. It is the book you have been preparing to read all your life. Throw out your Raymond Chandler, your Joe Lansdale and your Bukowski: the future of sharp, tumescent writing is here and it abides in Hangar 18.

Matt Howarth does cosmic, out-there comics, and I can see him doing a graphic adaptation of "Hangar 18."

It was very thoughtful of Josh to dye his hair and glasses lenses to match your book cover art.

That review is a classic in itself.

Here's a new article on the book in the latest issue of Alameda Magazine:
