On this week’s show we celebrated the birthday of the great American composer Harold Arlen, whose career spanned slinging melodies for the Cotton Club to crafting classics for Broadway and Hollywood such as Over the Rainbow and Stormy Weather.

  3. “Lydia the Tattooed Lady” Harold Arlen-Yip Harburg song performed by Groucho Marx in the 1939 movie: At the Circus, taken from the CD Box Set: Music! Music! Music! For the Fun of It – Essential Collection.

  4. “Stormy Weather,” the 1952 version by Billie Holiday & Her Orchestra of the 1933 song composed by Harold Arlen and Ted Koehler for Ethel Waters, who sang it in the Cotton Club.

  10. “Let's Fall In Love,” Anita O’Day performing the 1933 song by Harold Arlen & Ted Koehler on her recording: Live in Tokyo ’63.

  15. “It's Only a Paper Moon” the 1945 performance by Ella Fitzgerald & The Delta Rhythm of the song written by Harold Arlen, Yip Harburg & Billy Rose for the 1933 movie: Take a Chance from the collection: The Essence of Jazz Vocals.

  16. “Hit the Road to Dreamland” sung by Susannah McCorkle on her recording: From Bessie to Brazil, originally composed by Harold Arlen and Johnny Mercer for the 1942 movie: Star Spangled Rhythm, where it was sung by Dick Powell and Mary Martin. It was later used in the 1997 movie: L.A. Confidential. This version features Howard Alden on piano and guitar.
