On today’s show we took a slight detour from the world of Tiki-ness to celebrate the multifarious & magnanimous munificence of Mardi Gras. You may not be aware of it, but the doctor’s family hails from the City That Care Forgot – New Orleans making this annual musical diversion something of a hopeful pilgrimage.

  1. “Shake It and Break It,” the 1951 recording by Billie Pierce from the historical anthology: Classic Sounds of New Orleans, featuring Ms. Pierce on Vocal and Piano, Emile Barnes on Clarinet & Harrison Brazlee on Trombone Solos/Lawrence Tocca on Trumpet, Albert Glenny on Bass and Josiah “Cie” Frazier on Drums.

  2. “Mardi Gras Mambo,” the 1955 song recorded live on WWEZ Radio in 1955 by The Hawketts, featuring Art Neville on Vocal & Piano and Morris Bachamin on Tenor Sax, taken from the collection: Treacherous: A History of the Neville Brothers, 1955-1985.

  3. “Basin Street Blues,” the 1926 song composed by Spencer Williams in the 1929 recording that is on the CD: The Best of Louis Armstrong: The Hot Five and Hot Seven Recordings, with Armstrong on Trumpet and scatting, Fred Robinson on Trombone, Jimmy Strong on Clarinet, Earl Hines on Piano and Vocal, Marcy Cara on Banjo and Vocal, and Zutty Singleton on Drums.

  4. “Bourbon Street Parade” from the 1955 LP: Paul Barbarin & His New Orleans Jazz, with Paul Barbarin – who played with King Oliver, Sidney Bechet and Red Allen -- on Drums; John Brunious on Trumpet; Willie Humphreys on Clarinet; Bob Thomas on Trombone; Lester Santiago on Piano; Danny Barker on Banjo and Milt Hinton on Bass.

  5. “My Darlin' New Orleans,” the 1981 tune by Lil' Queenie & The Percolators, featured on the soundtrack album: Treme -- Music From the HBO Original Series, Season 1, featuring Leigh “Little Queenie” Harris on Vocal, John Magnie on Piano and Fred Kemp on Tenor Sax.

  6. A more jaundiced view of the Crescent City comes from the “Mardi Gras Song” by Mike West, who now lives in Lawrence, Kansas, with his wife Myshkin, who can be heard backing him on this track, and their children following being driven from New Orleans by Hurricane Katrina, taken from his 1996 CD: Redneck Riviera.

  7. “Big Chief” was performed by Professor Longhair on his 1979 album: Crawfish Fiesta, including Dr. John on Electric Guitar; Tony Dagradi and Andy Kaslow on Tenor Sax; Jim Moore on Baritone Sax; David Lee Watson on Bass; Alfred "Uganda" Robertson on Conga Drums; and Johnny Vidacovich on Drums.

  8. “My Indian Red” by Dr. John from his 1992 CD: Goin' Back to New Orleans, with the Neville Brothers on backing Vocals.

  9. “Zydeco Boogaloo” by Rockin’ Dopsie Jr. and the Zydeco Twisters from their album: Turn Up the Zydeco!   13. “Meet Me on Frenchman Street” by Shemarr Allen on Vocal and Trumpet, featuring Kermit Ruffins on Vocal and Stephen Walker on Trombone, from the CD of the same name as the song.
