The popular tropical drink was created by Trader Vic's restaurant founder Vic Bergeron in 1944 in California. According to Trader Vic's history, when Bergeron offered the experimental drink to a couple of friends who were visiting from Tahiti, one of them said "Maitra'i Roa Ae," which means "out of this world--the best" in Tahitian. Mai Tais became a popular cocktail in the '50s and '60s. The drink was also prominently featured in the Elvis Presley film Blue Hawaii. Today, the Mai Tai is synonymous with Polynesian culture both past and present.
