On this week’s show we celebrated the birthdays of just some of the fine musical artists who slid onto this mortal coil during the appelational month of April.

  1. ‘Back Water Blues” composed and sung by our birthday celebrant Bessie Smith in 1927 and found on the bodacious box set: The Prewar Blues Story – 1926-1943. Featuring James P. Johnson on Piano, this song about the devastating 1927 Mississippi flood in Louisiana, an event that was written about by the songwriter Randy Newman in his song which became the anthem for Hurricane Katrina.

  2. “I Am the Light,” performed by our Natal Notable, the Rev. Gary Davis from his copacetic collection: Complete Early Recordings.

  3. The Ted Koehler and Jimmy McHugh song “Spreadin' Rhythm Around,” sung in 1935 by our April Birthday Girl on her anthemic anthology: The Quintessential Billie Holiday, Volume 1: 1933-1935, featuring Teddy Wilson on Piano, Johnny Hodges on Alto Sax, Dave Barbour on Guitar, Dick Clark on Trumpet, Tom Macey on Clarinet, Grachan Moncur on Bass and Cozy Cole on Drums.

  4. “Hula O Makee,” the folk song about the ship called the Makee that ran aground off Kaua’i, performed by our Birthday Celebrant Charles “Gabby” Pahinui from his 1972 eponymous LP: Gabby.

  5. “Tune from Rangoon” taken from the Two-CD Set by our Natal Notable, The Exotic Sounds of Martin Denny.

  6. “Gambler,” by our April Birthday Boy, the congas master Ray Barretto and the famed actor Brock Peters on their 1960s adamant example of Afrotastic exotica: Mysterious Instinct – Akannaginnagi, featuring George Duvivier on Bass and Chief Bey joining in on Conga Drums.

  7. “Caonao” by our Birthday Boy Tito Puente & His Orchestra from the 1961 lapidary LP: Dance Mania, Volume 2, featuring fellow Birthday Celebrant Ray Barretto on Congas and a young Doc Severinson on Trumpet.

  8. The famed composition by our March Natal Notable Mongo Santamaria titled “Afro Blue” from the 1964 LP: Soul Sauce by the Vibraphonist Cal Tjader with Kenny Burrell on Electric Guitar, Donald Byrd on Trumpet, Jimmy Heath on Tenor Sax, April Birthday Baby Richard Davis on Bass, Armando Peraza and Alberto Valdes on Percussion, and Grady Tate on Drums.

  9. Our April Birthday Girl Helen Forrest sings “Takin’ a Chance on Love,” accompanied by Benny Goodman on Clarinet. This song, which was a Number One hit in 1943, was composed by Vernon Duke, John Latouche and Ted Fetter for the 1940 movie musical: Cabin in the Sky, and is found on the righteous retrospective: Sweet and Lovely – Capitol’s Great Ladies of Song.

  10. “Midnight Sun,” composed and performed by our Birthday Celebrant, the Vibraphonist Lionel Hampton & His Orchestra in 1947 and featuring Milt Buckner on Piano along with Hampton’s fellow April Birthday Luminaries Charles Mingus on Bass and Johnny Griffin on Tenor Sax. This version was taken from the antic anthology: Jazz Noire – Darktown Sleaze From the Mean Streets of 1940s L.A.

  11. “Gentleman Friend” arranged and conducted by our Birthday Boy on his 1956 LP: Russell Garcia’s Wigville Band, with Peggy Connelly on Vocal, fellow April Birthday Celebrants Jimmy Giuffre on Baritone Sax and Stan Levey on Drums, as well as Pete Candoli and Stu Williamson on Trumpet, Russ Cheever on Soprano Sax, Charlie Mariano on Alto Sax, Bill Hollman on Tenor Sax; Al Hendrickson on Guitar and Max Bennett on Bass.

  12. The 1942 song by Jimmy Mundy, Trummy Young and Johnny Mercer “Travelin' Light” sung by April Natal Notable Carmen McRae on her 1962 album: Lover Man, featuring fellow Birthday Celebrant Mundell Lowe on Electric Guitar, as well as Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis on Tenor Sax, Nat Adderley on Trumpet, Norman Simmons on Piano, Bob Cranshaw on Bass and Walter Perkins on Drums.

  13. “On Green Dolphin Street,” composed by Bronislau Kaper and Ned Washington for the 1947 movie of the same name, taken from the 1962 Mel Torme LP: Comin' Home Baby, featuring our Birthday Boy Shorty Rogers leading the Orchestra.

  14. “Song of the Jet (Samba do Aviao),” from the 1981 recording Ella abraca Jobim – Ella Fitzgerald Sings the Antonio Carlos Jobim Songbook, featuring our April Baby on Vocal, accompanied by fellow Birthday Boy Toots Thielemans on Harmonica along with Clark Terry on Trumpet, Zoot Sims on Tenor Sax, Joe Pass on Electric Guitar, Oscar Castro-Neves on Acoustic Guitar, Abraham Laboriel on Bass and Alexa Acuna on Drums; and Paulinho da Costa on Percussion, arranged and conducted by Erich Bulling.

  15. “Satin Doll,” composed by Natal Notable Duke Ellington and Billy Strayhorn, found on the 1958 LP: The Arrival of Victor Feldman, featuring the fellow April Birthday Boy Feldman on Vibes and Piano, along with similarly-situated celebrants Scott La Faro on Bass and Stan Levey on Drums.
