The Dr. Zarkov’s Tiki Lounge radio show was created and broadcast for the first time in August 2002 at this festival over the Radio Free Burning Man radio station, celebrating its 20th year broadcasting to the denizens and debris of Black Rock City. The show reappeared at the festival the following year and then in 2005 it migrated to Scotland to be heard at the 2005 Edinburgh Fringe Festival, where it was heard on Festival FM. After having found a permanent home here on Radio Fairfax starting in 2009, Dr. Zarkov’s Tiki Lounge returned to Burning Man in 2012 via prerecorded shows and has done so again this year, This show is broadcast on Wednesdays, 5-6 pm EDT at: http://www.radiofairfax.org The show is broadcast live; no recorded shows are archived, but some listeners choose to record it on their computers to listen later. Leviathan. “On Fire,” written by Ernie Cruz Jr and performed by the Ukulele Wizard Troy Fernandez on the symbiotic CD: Hawaiian Style Ukulele, with Tazra Vega on Guitar and Bass; Salaam Tillman on Percussion and Carole Atem on Keyboards. “Kela Mea Whiffa” composed by Eddie Kamae and referring to the smell that comes from standing water that is the byproduct of burning the sugar cane fields, recorded by Cyril Pahinui for his fragrant album: Ka Ho’oilina Mau, featuring Mr. Pahinui on Guitar and Vocals, with Kata Maduli on Bass and Percussion, and Michael Grande on Keyboards. “E Ku’u Baby Hot Cha Cha” sung by Elodia Kane and found on the combustive compilation: Rough Guide to the Music of Hawaii – Slide and Slack Key Surfing Sounds. Describing the singer as burning with love and lust, the song “Ay Candela” was written by Faustino Oramas and is sung by Ibrahim Ferrer on the bodacious Box Set: Hecho en Cuba, Volume 1. “Chango Ta' Veni,” composed by Justi Barretto and found on the righteous retrospective: 100% Azucar: The Best of Celia Cruz, with the La Sonora Matancera ensemble. The song’s lyrics refer to Chango, the God of Fire, Lightning and Thunder, and they also says the drum is coming and the earth will tremble. This 1958 version features arranger Lino Frias on Piano and Pedro Knight on Trumpet. “Fiesta” from Victor Feldman’s 1959 lagniappenary LP: Latinsville! With Mr. Feldman on Vibes, Andy Thomas on Piano, Tony Reyes on Bass, Frank Guerrero on Timbales and Ramon Rivera on Congas. The 1928 Cuban recording of “El Tambor de la Alegria” by the Grupo de la Alegria, featured on the anthemic anthology: R. Crumb’s Hot Women – Singers From the Torrid Regions of the World. “Build It Up, Paint It Nice, Tear It Down,” waxed in 1944 by Stan Kenton & His Orchestra with Stan Getz on Tenor Sax and a youthful Anita O’Day on Vocal, taken from the burning box set: Young Anita. The Van Halen classic “Hot for Teacher” interpolated on the surreptitious CD: The Sunny Side of the Moon – The Best of Richard Cheese & Lounge Against the Machine. “I Don’t Want to Set the World on Fire,” composed in 1941 by Eddie Seiler, Sol Marcus, Bennie Benjamin and Eddie Durham and introduced by the Ink Spots, taken here from the incendiary retrospective Betty Carter -- Priceless Jazz Collection. “Fire Fire” by Lloyd Robinson, found on the bulging Box Set: Reggae – The Definitive Collection: Songs of Freedom. “Fire Dance,” a piano duet by Bob Bralove and the former Grateful Dead keyboardist Tom Constanten as Dose Hermanos on their 1996 lycergical CD: Sonic Roar Shock “Red Hot Mama” performed by Ursula 1000 on their raging record: Mondo Beyondo, instigated by Alex Gimeno and featuring Big Mike Geier on Vocal and Guitar. “On Fire Like This (Tribal Mix)” by a recently disbanded band of musicians and circus performers famous for their concerts at Burning Man called The Mutaytor, from their scintillacious CD: Yelling Theatre in a Crowded Fire.
